CEOExpress Update
August 17th, 2004
Note From the Executive Editor

Our "dog days of summer" newsletter is a short one with some fun tips and new finds that will help you give better business presentations, get great marketing pointers, and a personal request at the end.

June New and Notable:

The "Beyond Bullets" Website: CEOExpressSelect member, Ed Sullivan of AriaSystems told me about this terrific site that distills into classic terms how to make your PowerPoint presentations not only more entertaining, but more focused and successful. This blog, called Beyond Bullets states: “In their study of rhetoric, the ancient Greeks described how people can persuade by appealing to reason, emotion, and the character of the speaker. Has anything changed since then? Nope. The only thing new today is the additional power of projected media to help us make our case.” The author describes techniques for storyboarding, clarifying your thoughts, painting a canvas, collaborating, opening a presentation dashboard, cross-media documents, splitting meaning, and more. Start out by reviewing “Aristotle’s Top Ten PowerPoint Tips” and then read about a CEO who was fired via Death by PowerPoint, and how the Pentagon uses PowerPoint as a tool to shape strategy. Use your CEOExpress “One-Click” feature to save this site. It’s a keeper you will refer to over and over (and pass on to your staff :-)

New Excellent Magazine: There is a great new newsletter and magazine you should know about. IDG has started CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) Magazine. This new vehicle will give you great insights on marketing--what's working, what's new, and how to avoid marketing disasters. You can sign up free for the hard copy magazine. Sign up, it is a terrific resource.

August's "Did you know we had this feature?" Search your CEOExpress links! Did you know that you now have the ability to search though all the links on CEOExpress? Did you love the "Best Places" site, but you can't recall what category you originally found it in? Do you have a vague memory of a great site featuring Ancient Mexico in the “Daily Great Site,” but you forgot to save it to your personal links? Now you can simply enter "ceo;” (without the “quote marks”) into the CEOExpress Internet Search box before your search term, and you will see a list of all related CEOExpress links, as well as archived Great Sites and Editor's Notes. It’s really easy, but a bit hard to explain in words: Take a look at this quick demo.
New Web Based Member Email Coming Soon! We have just contracted with a new email vendor who is going to provide a far superior product for our members with enhanced storage capability, virus and spam filters, IMAP and POP as well as mail forwarding. We will be making the shift to the new vendor in September. We have changed vendors in the past without issue and expect a smooth transition this time. Stay tuned for more information coming shortly.

Software Tip: August is not the time for software suggestions, but I have a fabulous one for September! Remember to check our archives for past software tips.

Newsletter Archives: To refer to a previous newsletter, visit our Newsletter Archive, which can now be found on both the 'Customize Your Page' and 'Scratch Pad and Notes' pages.

Ad-Free Log-in Page: Another reminder about a feature we added earlier this year. If you're traveling or just want to avoid the banner and pop-under ads on the public CEOExpress, go to https://www.ceoexpress.com/login for our preferred member login page. If you sign in to your personal desktop each day, be sure to set this page as your homepage.

A Personal Request: I am walking the Boston Marathon route in September to raise research money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in memory of my sisters Anne Marie and Ellen. I have a donor who will match every dollar donated, so it is a great opportunity to double a donation instantly. If you are so inclined, I would be great to have your support of this walk for cancer. My thanks in advance for anything you wish to do. (Note: I don't do this stuff often. I am only doing this once :-)

I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful summer and got in a great vacation. I will talk with you in September with a newsletter choker block full with great tips and fabulous software finds.

As usual, feel free to send me a note. I truly enjoy hearing from you.

Best regards,
