I am not sure this can be an either or answer. If you have convictions about your beliefs, you will of course be passionate about those convictions and if it is an important enough issue, try to influence others to the validity of your position.

Many times, myself included, we argue about issues that are not all that important. I am hearing Andy in my head right now. I am trying to work on that in my own life. Other things are truly important issues (even life and death issues), those we need not be afraid to argue for our position and against a position we think is truly harmful. I think if you can find a way to discuss the issue or person in a way that stays constructive, you will have a better chance of influencing others. That can be a very difficult thing for me to do sometimes.
