Google Pixel 9 phones might have emergency satellite messaging
It often feels like we live in a fully connected world, but anyone who has been caught without a signal at a time of need can tell you it's far from true. Emergency satellite connectivity is a solution to this problem, and one the Google Pixel 9 series and next-generation Google Fold will allegedly offer, according to Android Authority's Kamila Wojciechowska. The feature will purportedly be available for T-Mobile customers first, thanks to the network provider's partnership with SpaceX to create satellite messaging. It could become available on other networks in the future.

The messaging service will allegedly ask users questions such as "What best describes your situation?" and "Are there weapons involved?" It's unclear whether the feature will be free for Google Pixel 9 and next-gen Google Fold users. T-Mobile hasn't confirmed pricing for its satellite messaging service in previous announcements.

If the news is true, Google would be following in the footsteps of Apple, which launched its own Emergency SOS satellite feature in late 2022 for iPhone 1

The Morning After: Meta crams its AI chatbot into your Instagram DMs
Instagram got a surprise visitor. Meta AI, the company's AI-powered chatbot that can answer questions, write poetry and generate images with a simple text prompt, is up in your DMs. Meta warned that Meta AI was coming and has spent the last few months adding the chatbot to products like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. We all knew Instagram would be next.

"Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in various phases, and we're testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity," a Meta spokesperson told Engadget. For some of us at Engadget, the feature appeared in Instagram's Direct Messaging inbox.

We could tap it to start a conversation with Meta AI, where it could give definitions of words, suggest headlines and… generate images of dogs on skateboards.

Ah, the future.

On Friday, people around the web noticed a new addition to their Instagram: Meta AI, the company's general-purpose, AI-powered chatbot that can answer questions, write poetry and generate images with a simple text prompt. The move isn't surprising. Meta revealed Meta AI in September 2023 and has spent the last few months adding the chatbot to products like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, so adding it to Instagram seems like a no-brainer.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tip: Get 2 years of access for dirt cheap

(Note: This trick was last confirmed as working on April 11, 2024. Also, codes for select countries will not stack any longer—see news update below.)

This deal isn't quite as good as before: Before July 6, 2023, you could lock up to three years at 63 percent off. When Xbox Game Pass Ultimate first launched, early adopters discovered that if you activated one month of Game Pass Ultimate on an account, it converted existing Xbox Live Gold and standard Xbox Game Pass subscriptions to Ultimate at a 1:1 rate. Any prepaid time up to the maximum of three years got the upgrade.

But things have changed. After Microsoft's price hike on Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate, the conversion rate got nerfed to a 3:2 ratio. You'll now pay about $8.20 per month using this conversion hack. Not as good as $5 per month (the old deal), but still much cheaper than list price for Ultimate ($17/month) or even PC Game Pass ($10/month

Why it makes sense to converge the NOC and SOC
It's been 17 years and counting since Nemertes first wrote about the logic of integrating event response in the enterprise: bringing together the security operations center (SOC) and network operations center (NOC) at the organizational, operational, and technological levels. Needless to say, this has not happened at most organizations, although there has been a promising trend toward convergence in the monitoring and data management side of things. It's worth revisiting the issue.

Why converge? The arguments for convergence remain pretty compelling:

Both the NOC and SOC are focused on keeping an eye on the systems and services comprising the IT environment; spotting and understanding anomalies; and spotting and responding to events and incidents that could affect or are affecting services to the business. Both are focused on minimizing the effects of events and incidents on the business. The streams of data they watch overlap hugely. They often use the same systems (e.g. Splunk) in managing and exploring that data. Both are focused on root-cause analysis based on those data streams. Both adopt a tiered response approach, with first-line responders for "business as usual" operations and occurrences, and anywhere from one to three tiers of escalation to more senior engineers, architects, and analysts. Most crucially: When something unusual happens in or to the environment (that router is acting funny), it can be very hard to know up front whether it is fundamentally a network issue (that router is acting funny - it has been misconfigured) or a security issue (that router is acting funny - it has been compromised) or both (that router is acting funny - it has been misconfigured and is now a serious vulnerability). Having fully separate NOC and SOC can mean duplicative work as both teams pick something up and examine it. It can mean ping-ponging inciden
