The Morning After: Meta teases a limited-edition Quest headset inspired by Xbox
Meta announced it's opening up the Quest's operating system to third-party companies, allowing them to build headsets of their own. The Quest OS is being rebranded to Meta Horizon OS and already has two companies interested.

ASUS' Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand is working on new "performance gaming" headsets, while Lenovo's focus is on devices for "productivity, learning and entertainment." However, most intriguingly, perhaps, Meta says it's also working on a limited-edition Xbox "inspired" Quest headset. (Microsoft and Meta also worked together recently to bring Xbox cloud gaming to the Quest.) While this could just be a reskinned Quest 3, this collaboration could lead to future headsets made entirely for Microsoft's consoles. If PlayStation can have VR, then surely Xbox can too.

Copilot running on your PC? Microsoft's new AI could be the key

On Monday, Microsoft introduced "Phi-3-mini," a 3.8-billion parameter language model that the company claims rivals the performance of the slightly older ChatGPT 3.5 and Mixtral 8x7B. The paper is titled "Phi-3 Technical Report: A Highly Capable Language Model Locally on Your Phone," which is clear evidence that Microsoft now has an LLM that can run directly on your PC.

Microsoft hasn't said that Phi-3-mini will be the next Copilot, running locally on your PC. But there's a case to be made that it is, and that we have an idea of how well it will work.

1.) Local AI matters It's a familiar argument: if you issue a search request to Bing, Google Gemini, Claude, or Copilot, it lives in the cloud. This could be embarrassing ("is this wart bad"?) or sensitive ("can I get in trouble for stealing mail?") or something that you don't want to leak at all like a list of bank statements.

Corporations would like to ask questions of their data via AIs like Copilot, but there are no "on premises" versions of Copilot to date. A local version of Copilot is almost a necessary option at this point.

Cisco firewall upgrade boosts visibility into encrypted traffic
The software that runs Cisco's new Firewall 4200 Series now includes the ability to see into encrypted traffic without decrypting it, which the vendor says will allow enterprise customers to better protect hybrid and multicloud applications.

The enhanced Cisco Encrypted Visibility Engine (EVE) is part of the 7.4 version of the Secure Firewall operating system. Version 7.4 also includes zero-trust capabilities and improved application access control. The 4200 Series' operating system also helps improve overall firewall performance - it's twice as fast as previous high-end Cisco firewalls, the company says.

EVE, which has been available since version 7.2 of the software, takes things further than traditional firewalls because it now lets customers detect the client application within an encrypted tunnel, according to Rick Miles, vice president of product management, cloud and network security in Cisco's security business group.
