Something else ó what?

I think itís one thing to be for or against something or someone... we all are for or against this or that. We all are for against someone as well.

So, itís one thing to recognize where I stand with respect to a person or an issue. Itís another thing for an opposing person to (1) recognize where he or she stands with respect to a person or an issue and (2) be willing to consider differing views.

If two people donít agree, and are not willing to consider differing views, they may as well be pushing a rope. It is neither effective nor ineffective to be for or against when neither side is willing to consider the differing view with a mind to considering whether their original view should change. The disagreement will stand notwithstanding a for or against position. In that case, it is never effective either way.

If we have differing views that are not necessarily OPPOSING views, then we may have a willingness to say that this is not a hill worth dying on. The differences may be inconsequential.

Also, if the views are differing but not opposing, then there is an effectiveness when enthusiasm wins the day. We support this together!!! There is also an effectiveness when we oppose something together... Together, we oppose those who would attack our country, even if we donít agree on how we would approach it. Pearl Harbor is a good illustration.

Today, we donít seem to have the Pearl Harbor magnet that pulls us all together. Itís been 16 years since 911, and we donít even agree on how to fight terror. Heck, Israel has been fighting it for much longer, and it still exists. Can it really be defeated?

We donít agree on whether Islamic extremism is an issue about which we should unite.

In football, it seems equally effective to be FOR my team (as a player) playing to defend honor and reputation of my teammates, when compared to be against the other team when they are ridiculing my team or any of my teammates. Weíve seen a clear superior team pop off when facing a lower quality team, only to wake up the monster and suffer a surprising defeat.

So, there is no Ďmore effectiveí way to adopt universally. Itís situational. As such, there is a logic to be employed along with common sense (which is increasingly uncommon).

God help us all!
