AMD brings AI to business desktops with Ryzen Pro chips

AMD's launch arrives on the heels of Intel's 14th-gen vPro platform, which also offers desktop and mobile parts. The difference is that Intel launched its vPro refresh based upon the "Raptor Lake Refresh" architecture, which lacks AI; AMD's Ryzen Pro 8000 series is relatively consistent across both its mobile and desktop offerings. However, not every new Ryzen Pro 8000 mobile or desktop chip includes AI support.

If you've been following our coverage of AMD's Ryzen 8000 mobile CPUs and AMD's corresponding Ryzen 8000 desktop processors, AMD's latest chip lineups shouldn't be surprising. AMD's latest Ryzen Pro 8000 processors pretty much overlap its consumer offerings, with the Ryzen 9 Pro 8945HS (8 cores, 16 threads, boosting from 4.0GHz to 5.2GHz) on down. AMD's Ryzen Pro 8000 desktop processors are similar, with the Ryzen 8700G (8 cores, 16 threads, boosting from 4.2GHz to 5.1GHz) at the top of the stack. All of the new processors are 4nm parts, based on AMD's Zen 4 architecture.

What's new? Some of AMD's Ryzen Pro 8000 desktop chips now offer Ryzen AI, a competitive advantage that AMD is pushing hard. (AMD's existing Ryzen 8000 desktop lineup supports Ryzen AI.) The Ryzen Pro lineup now also offers "E" versions, which red

Use your TV as a computer monitor: Everything you need to know

Can you use a TV as a monitor? You've probably already got a big screen in your house, though—a TV. At the end of the day, isn't an HDTV just a giant, living-room-oriented computer monitor?

Not exactly. While you can use a TV as a computer monitor in most cases, that doesn't mean it's the best option. In fact, it's likely less attractive, convenient, and usable than you think (not to mention, probably not that cheap). There's a reason dirt-cheap 32-inch HDTVs aren't flying off the shelves to be used as budget-friendly jumbo screens.

You definitely can use an HDTV as your PC's display, though, and your television can also work in a pinch if you suddenly need a second screen. Here's everything you need to know about how to set up a TV as a computer monitor—and why you might not want to.

How to use a TV as a monitor You can use a TV as a monitor, but it could take a little finagling. You may need a special cable, depending on your PC's outputs and your HDTV's inputs, and you'll need to check a couple of settings, but you shouldn't have too much trouble hooking most modern PCs up to most modern HDTVs.

Modern HDTVs have HDMI outputs. Some older HDTVs have DVI inputs, and some even have VGA inputs specifically designated

How to digitize VHS tapes the cheap way

While I have no intention of actually watching them — oy, the embarrassment — I recently received the original tapes from my parents and felt like they were worth preserving in a more enduring form than VHS. I was able to do it for cheap thanks to my USB capture card, which I originally bought to take screenshots of streaming devices for my TechHive column on cord cutting but which continues to have all kinds of other neat uses.

Below, I'll walk through how to digitize your own VHS tapes or camcorder footage using the same methods, plus a few extra tricks that might make a USB capture card worth considering.

DuckDuckGo launches Privacy Pro bundle with VPN included

The new VPN, built entirely in-house by DuckDuckGo, promises not to log any user data and will run right in the DuckDuckGo browser — a standalone VPN app is not currently available. The VPN will allow for up to five simultaneous device connections, with 13 server locations in the U.S., Europe, and Canada. It will also exclusively use the open-source WireGuard protocol for all connections, which is a great choice as it's still the fastest and most secure protocol. DuckDuckGo plans to expand its VPN in the future adding more servers and country locations as well.

Subscribers to Privacy Pro can also take advantage of a personal data removal feature that will "scan dozens of these sites for your info and, if found, request its removal, even handling back-and-forth confirmation emails for you automatically behind the scenes." It will even continue this process, re-scanning websites regularly to help minimize the risk of your data reappearing. Users will be able to view the personal data that the service has already removed at any time from their browser.

To complete the trifecta of privacy features, Privacy Pro will include an ad

AI video is heading to Adobe Premiere Pro

It's been about two years since Midjourney ushered in AI art, consisting of art generated entirely from scratch as well as "inpainting" and "outpainting." Outpainting attracted attention because AI art was being used to essentially extend the boundaries of photographs and paintings, creating a plausible addition to what wasn't there. Now Adobe is doing the same with Premiere Pro.

On Monday, Adobe showed off a video version of what it calls Generative Fill, the same technique that it uses for Adobe Photoshop and its Adobe Firefly generative AI art. "Crop" a photo outside of its boundaries and Photoshop will extend it. You can also remove or replace an element in a photo like swapping a crown for a baseball cap.

Generative AI within Premiere Pro will do the same thing, Adobe said. In the demonstration video shown below, Adobe is showing how Premiere will allow an editor to select (via its Magic Lasso) an object in a scene and remove it from the entire clip across multiple frames. Likewise, an editor will be able to use the AI-powered Generative Fill and "extend" the scene as well. In the demonstration, the extension applies to a calm, focused shot of a single individual and I would assume that it will be most effective in this use as well. Adding complex motion or transitions will be far more difficult. It's not clear whether Adobe has that capability as yet.

Best SSDs of 2024: Reviews and buying advice

Many SSDs come in a 2.5-inch form factor and connect to your PC via the same SATA port used by a traditional hard drive. But tiny NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) "gumstick" SSDs that fit in an M.2 connection on a modern motherboard are becoming increasingly common, along with blazing-fast PCIe 4.0 (and now 5.0) solid-state drives for compatible PCs; you'll even find SSDs that sit on a PCIe adapter and slot into your motherboard like a graphics card or sound card. No, picking the perfect SSD isn't as simple as it used to be.

Why you should trust us: It's in our name, PCWorld. Our reviewers have been testing PC hardware for decades. Our storage evaluations are thorough and rigorous, testing the limits of every product — from performance benchmarks to the practicalities of regular use. Get MSI's ultrawide OLED monitor for $779, its lowest price yet

The MSI MEG 342C is comparable to other 34-inch OLED monitors from Dell and Samsung, with a standard 3440×1440 resolution and a subtle 1800R curve to its panel. With a 175Hz refresh rate and a lightning-fast .03ms response time, it's ready to tackle even the fastest multiplayer games with the perfect blacks and vibrant colors that OLED brings to the table.

Other highlights of the spec list include DisplayPort 1.4 and double HDMI 2.1, plus USB-C video and four extra USB-A ports for accessories. An integrated KVM switch can handle multiple machines in picture-by-picture or picture-in-picture mode. The screen supports AMD FreeSync and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 and, naturally, it includes a little RGB bling around the back.

MSI includes "OLED Care" features to prevent burn-in with pixel shifting, refreshing, and automatic dimming on static screens. It also comes with a three-year warranty that explicitly covers burn-in. The regular price is $999 and this "limited time offer" from MSI's US store doesn't have a specific expiration date, so get an order in quickly if you're ready to buy.

CPU-FAN versus CPU-OPT on motherboards: What's the difference?

The connector provides a 12-volt DC connection with at least one ampere to ensure that sufficient power is provided to the entire system to adequately cool the chip.

Despite the almost identical function, there are some differences between CPU OPT and CPU FAN. CPU OPT does not check whether a connection exists before the system is booted. In contrast, the system reports an error and refuses to boot completely if there is no connection to CPU FAN.

CPU OPT only supplies power to the connected device, while CPU FAN both supplies power and communicates with the motherboard's BIOS or UEFI system to provide statistical data.

You can connect multiple devices to CPU OPT by using a splitter or hub, while CPU FAN only requires one connection for the cooler itself.

How to access adult content websites with a VPN

This is the recent reality for many in the U.S. after certain states have passed age-verification laws for adult websites. In March of this year, the popular adult site PornHub went dark in Texas in order to protest new strict laws imposed by the state requiring just such verifications, following similar standoffs in other states.

Fortunately, getting around site-specific geographical restrictions is easy enough with the right VPN. Below you'll find more info about these new laws, how to use a VPN to access mature content, and why you should use a VPN no matter what websites you visit.

What's going on with the chiplet market?

The first misconception to dispel is that chiplets are a new idea. In fact they've been around for decades — IBM was making them as far back as the '80s, albeit in six-figure hardware for industrial customers. The basic idea is that you can separate functions of a processor into different individual chips for better performance. "Like the McDLT," says Will, "so the hot stays hot and the cool stays cool."

Now chip makers like AMD and Intel are applying this idea to the CPU itself, isolating disparate components to different parts of the die, like the much-vaunted NPUs that are making everything an "AI PC" this year. The platonic ideal of this concept is an open standard, where you can have primary compute cores from one company with an integrated GPU from another company and a memory controller from another, all working harmoniously on a single standard.

We love HP's ultraportable Dragonfly Pro laptop, and now it's $600 off

The Dragonfly Pro is HP's premiere consumer laptop design, boasting a sleek .72-inch-thin body made of aluminum and magnesium with a bright 14-inch IPS touchscreen standard. But it's also a surprisingly practical machine. While it's a bit heavier than other laptops in this category at 2.42 pounds, it's packing some serious tech thanks to a Ryzen 7 CPU, a roomy 16GB of DDR5 RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage.

HP didn't skimp on the trim, either. Reviewer Brendan Nystedt was impressed by the laptop's great speakers and solid battery life, and it has a 5-megapixel webcam with infrared sensors for Windows Hello face unlocking. If the laptop has a weakness, it's port selection: Three USB-C ports are flexible on their own, but a lack of USB-A, dedicated video-out, and a headphone jack mean you'll probably want to travel with a USB-C dongle in your bag.

B&H Photo's sale doesn't have an end date, which means that it's probably limited to a select number of units on-hand. This is a killer sale on a killer laptop, so if you're interested, grab it before this deal disappears.

Google One VPN is the Google Graveyard's newest victim

So sayeth an email that arrived in my inbox last night, informing me that Google One will be "phasing out two benefits." The service is no longer offering free shipping for photo prints — which admittedly I never even thought about using — and the One VPN that comes with my $1.99 a month 200GB storage plan. Google says it'll be gone sometime later this year, though precisely when wasn't shared.

Why? According to a Google representative speaking to 9to5Google, the company is shutting down the VPN because "people simply weren't using it." I'm not willing to take that statement on faith, though. I'd wager that there's a far more mercurial calculation going on behind the scenes, because the multi-device VPN perk that came with my $2 subscription is far less expensive than a lot of the competitors out there.

Google One VPN is the company's latest app or service to get the unceremonious axe. While it's true that most of the things Google offers to consumers are free, it still feels like you're dating someone with a heartbreaker reputation every time you try a new one. I had more than a dozen feeds in Google Podcasts, all wonderfully organized and auto-streaming…and

This $100 Samsung display is perfect for a low-cost multi-monitor setup

This particular model is nearly borderless, which means you're getting a good amount of screen. It also measures 22-inches-a good size if you plan on doubling up for a dual screen setup, something that's certainly achievable at this rock-bottom price. That's the size of my own monitors and I've still got plenty of desk space to spare.

The Samsung T350 has a resolution of 1920×1080 and a refresh rate of 75Hz. Sure, we've seen higher resolution displays, but 1080p is well-suited to day-to-day tasks as well as some gaming. Whether you're watching a video or playing a game, the 75Hz refresh rate should keep things looking nice and smooth. AMD's FreeSync technology is also built-in, which resolves stuttering issues by synchronizing the monitor's refresh rate with your PC's GPU. This is good news if you play faster-paced games.

Overall, this is a solid monitor, especially at this price. Don't miss out, folks.

Are free VPNs any good?

A free VPN can be an attractive option for people seeking a no-cost solution to their anonymity and security concerns. But beyond the appeal of not having to pay for the service, free VPNs can come with serious drawbacks or even hazardous data collection practices.

To help you make the right decision with your VPN and keep you safe and secure online, I'll cover what you can expect to get with a free VPN, the pros and cons of free vs. paid, and what free options are worth considering.

What do you get with a free VPN? Included features with free VPNs can vary widely. Some will impose myriad restrictions; only offering a laughably low data limit, one or two server options, or speed constraints. These are oftentimes free versions of popular paid services that want to draw in users and entice them to upgrade in the future. Other free VPNs will provide no such restrictions, but will hoover up user data and sell it in order to continually fund the service.

Multiboot vs. virtual PC vs. live DVD: Which is best for multiple OSes?

The advantage: You don't have to install anything and no changes are made to the Windows configuration — the live system therefore leaves no traces: If you remove the DVD or USB stick, your PC will boot the permanently installed operating system, such as Windows 10 or 11, after the restart.

If, on the other hand, you want to try out Linux Mint (or another operating system) properly and also install applications, then a virtual computer may be the better choice as a first step.

Here's the situation right now: Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025. Consumers will be offered extended support to allow them to go past that, but Microsoft hasn't said how much it will charge. Businesses will need to pay $61 per year. And the mess that was (and is) Windows 11's hardware requirements means that there will be a few users who will fall through the cracks, as the Reddit user obviously has.

So what are users supposed to do? A whole host of Reddit commenters noted the contradiction: Microsoft is encouraging them to upgrade to the latest cool thing, then telling them they can't have it. In some sense, this is the same message the PC industry delivers with each new gene

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tip: Get 2 years of access for dirt cheap

(Note: This trick was last confirmed as working on April 11, 2024. Also, codes for select countries will not stack any longer—see news update below.)

This deal isn't quite as good as before: Before July 6, 2023, you could lock up to three years at 63 percent off. When Xbox Game Pass Ultimate first launched, early adopters discovered that if you activated one month of Game Pass Ultimate on an account, it converted existing Xbox Live Gold and standard Xbox Game Pass subscriptions to Ultimate at a 1:1 rate. Any prepaid time up to the maximum of three years got the upgrade.

But things have changed. After Microsoft's price hike on Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate, the conversion rate got nerfed to a 3:2 ratio. You'll now pay about $8.20 per month using this conversion hack. Not as good as $5 per month (the old deal), but still much cheaper than list price for Ultimate ($17/month) or even PC Game Pass ($10/month

Udio's AI music is my new obsession

The thing is, I'm not sure how long it will be as great as it is right now. So: Udio.com. Click on it. Start using it. It's free! For now, anyway.

Udio works like an AI art generator. You can either specify a prompt and let Udio do all the heavy lifting, from music to lyrics, or get as detailed as you want. Did I mention that there are lyrics? And vocals? Yes, Udio will even sing the lyrics for you, in voices that sound incredibly realistic and even emotional. Each "song" is generated as a 30-second clip, but you have the option of extending it with extra time, and even intros and outros. The maximum length of the song is short, though: about 90 seconds, Udio says.

Unlike some AI art generators, Udio seems at least vaguely aware of copyright; you can't ask it to sing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" (or any song, actually) in the vocals of Taylor Swift. But there doesn't seem to be any prohibition against taking the "My Way" lyrics and writing a drum-and-bass song around them, if you want.

How we test gaming mice at PCWorld

But how do you decide on what's right for you specifically? The following guide will help. Here we give you a comprehensive rundown of how we test gaming mice at PCWorld. It's a thorough process, so buckle up!

What we test in gaming mice The design and comfort For the uninitiated, a gaming mouse is just that — a gaming mouse. But peripheral geeks know better. Gaming mice come in varying shapes and configurations and with different features. Those things dictate how you can hold them, which games they're good for, and even which hand you should use them in. We investigate all those things, but we also investigate how stylish the design is — whether or not the mouse has RGB lighting, logos, or an aesthetically pleasing look.

Apocalypse, now streaming: Elgato debuts SPECIAL edition Fallout gear

All the gear gets the Pip-Boy aesthetic treatment, which is to say, it looks like it's made out of rusty green steel and covered in retro-futurist branding. The Wave XLR is a particularly nice example, with tons of little touches that sell the Vault-Tec illusion. In addition to the branded hardware, buyers get access to free digital assets including game-accurate icons for the Stream Deck and a "Pip-Boy" voice modulator that makes it sound like you're broadcasting out over an irradiated hellscape.

All the items are the same price as their non-Fallout standard versions ($150 for the Stream Deck, $160 for the Wave XLR, $100 for the Wave DX mic, and $100 for th

Best mechanical keyboards 2024: Top picks for every need

Allow us to remove some of the questioning and doubt. Below are the best mechanical keyboards we've reviewed, in a variety of categories—best overall, on a budget, for gaming, wireless, et cetera. Not everything makes the list — for example, though G.Skill's KM250 is a shockingly good deal, we can't say the same for the larger and very different KM360 design. Though they excel in different areas, each mechanical keyboard pick is absolutely the best in its class, and well worth both your attention and your hard-earned dough.

Be sure to check out some of our most recent reviews, like the Happy Hacking HHKB Studio and the Razer Huntsman V3.

Why you should trust us: PCWorld has been the go-to name for personal computer news and reviews for over 40 years. Immerse yourself in Acer's ultrawide gaming monitors for $240 today

The Acer Gaming XV340CK monitor is a bit on the basic side, but it has it where it counts: a quality panel. Unlike some budget ultrawides, this one's using a 3440×1440 resolution with an IPS display, instead of the cheaper TN or VA panels. That means that it's big and sharp enough to show off the best graphics, while also being color-accurate enough for some photo editing work. And with a 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, it can handle fast-paced multiplayer games just as well.

The monitor also packs a standard VESA mount for use with monitor arms, two HDMI and two DisplayPort inputs for use with multiple machines, and a pair of USB-A 3.0 ports for accessories. It also has a couple of 3-watt speakers, but, um, don't use those, get some real speakers or just use headphones instead. Normally $300, today Newegg has this monitor on sale for a fantastic $239.99.

Devious ‘man in the middle' hacks on the rise: How to stay safe

One kind of attack is especially popular: First known as a man-in-the-middle attack (now referred to machine-in-the-middle, adversary-in-the-middle, or on-path attacks), it lets hackers insert themselves between your devices and the server they communicate with, in order to steal login information ad session cookies to then take over your account.

It starts with you clicking on a phishing link, then entering your credentials on a fake copy of a legitimate website. Bad actors then capture the username and password, along with the access token, then redirect you to the real website.

MitM attacks can be used on accounts with strong, unique passwords and even locked down with two-factor authentication (2FA), as recently popped up in the news when Google and Microsoft accounts became targets of a new phishing kit. (Yep, even hacking can be as simple as a software subscription.)

But as unnerving as it can feel to know that hackers can "defeat" 2FA, you're not defenseless against an MitM attack. In fact, you can strengthen your security with a s

Absurd deal: RTX-powered gaming laptops don't get much cheaper than this

This specific model comes with an Intel Core i7-13700H CPU, the aforementioned Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage. You can also add more RAM and replace the SSD if need be. The upgradeability factor is awesome because it allows you to extend the life of your machine. It also has G-Sync, which synchronizes the display's refresh rate to the GPU, resulting in smoother visuals. This is important when playing faster paced titles, as it reduces the likelihood of stuttering issues. Finally, the 15.6-inch 1080p display has a 144Hz refresh rate, further adding to the fluidity of the picture.

This is a killer deal — RTX-powered gaming laptops almost never get cheaper than this. Snatch it up before it's gone!

Google's best AI editing tools are coming to Chromebooks, not PCs

Google has traditionally launched new features on its Pixel phones. Those have included Magic Eraser, along with Photo Unblur and Portrait Light, which use various AI tricks to spruce up your photos. Portrait Light, for example, can "reposition" the sun to light up your photo in a more attractive way, and Magic Eraser can simply zap an unwanted object from your picture.

Beginning on May 15, Google says it will open all three tools to pretty much anyone on iOS and Android, provided you have access to an Android 8.0 phone or an iPhone running iOS 15. Google won't charge any subscription fees, either.

But there's a catch if you prefer to work on a more powerful device, with a keyboard. Google is not making those editing tools available to PCs, whether it be as a dedicated Windows app or even the web. Instead, you'll need a Chromebook, and only the very latest premium models, at that.

Specifically, "your device must be a Chromebook Plus with ChromeOS version 118 ," Google says. Unfortunately, that's all hidden in a footnote to Google's blog post announcing the new changes.

That Google is reserving its AI editing features for the new Chrom

Broadband ‘nutrition labels' kick in, revealing hidden fees for ISPs

And yes, the term "nutrition label" is accurate — they're modeled after the list of ingredients you might find on a box of cereal, say, along with a breakdown of what you're being charged. Those labels must be posted on the websites of ISPs as well as in retail stores. The labels also cover both wired and wireless broadband plans, so you should see them, for example, in a Verizon store.

The idea is to allow consumers to know just exactly what they'll receive when they sign up for broadband service — and what they'll be charged for, too. The new labels won't eliminate the fees that are sometimes hidden in a customer's bill — they'll just make them more obvious so that you can factor all of that in when evaluating broadband providers.

"The labels must disclose important information about broadband prices, introductory rates, data allowances, and broadband speeds," the FCC says. "They also include links to information about network management practices and privacy policies."

The process dates back to 2021, when Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which ordered the FCC to begin work crafting consumer-friendly broadband labels. In 2022, the FCC began actually creating those rules.

The labels themselves will look like this example, provided by the FCC:

This refurb ThinkPad laptop with 16GB of RAM is just $365

Normally, we'd hesitate to feature a refurbished item as a deal, but this one has a couple of extenuating circumstances. First, it's being sold directly from Lenovo, so it's truly "certified refurbished" and not just a used laptop with a sticker slapped on. Second, it's being sold with a two-year service warranty from Allstate included in the price, so it actually has even better coverage than this laptop had when it was new.

The ThinkPad L14 is a mid-range design packing a Ryzen 6 5670U CPU, the aforementioned 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage. That's enough power to handle pretty much any standard workload, though the integrated graphics won't handle high-end games or 3D design. The screen is 14-inches at a standard 1080p resolution.

My favorite bit of this laptop's design, aside from the excellent ThinkPad keyboard, is a generous selection of ports. The left side includes double USB-C (one always on for charging), USB-A, and full-sized HDMI and Ethernet ports. With a second USB-A port and a MicroSD card slot on the right, you can leave the dongles at home.

This laptop originally sold for around $900 and even now commands something in the $450 range for refurb units, so this is a great discount if you need a machi

This weird Asus motherboard with SO-DIMM slots is an abomination

That's not all. Despite the ROG branding for Asus' top-of-the-line gaming hardware, it's clearly using a TUF-branded CPU cover, indicating that it's from a cheaper Asus line. It's also missing some of the ROG heatsink gear, replaced with generic alternatives. And when Txwixter user @wxnod booted up a build with the required hardware, they spotted a Kingston Fury boot logo on the monitor instead of the Asus ROG or TUF branding, though the firmware appears to be otherwise unaltered.

Now, it's not unprecedented for desktop computers to use laptop-sized SO-DIMM memory modules. But that design choice is generally reserved for similarly tiny desktops, like Intel's now-discontinued NUC series. There's simply no reason to go with the usually slower and more expensive SO-DIMMs on a full-sized ATX motherboard, certainly not a high-performance gaming model.

Logitech's new gaming keyboard is tiny, optical, and expensive

The Logitech Pro X 60 wireless board gets its name from the 60% form factor it's rocking, chopping off everything but the primary alphanumeric keys. The design also gets a volume wheel on the left side. The layout is a standard configuration, so the keyboard should work with standard ISO keycap replacement sets.

But you might not want to — unlike some keyboard suppliers (which shall remain nameless Razer) that ship cheaper ABS keycaps with expensive boards, these are doubleshot PBT caps that also let the RGB lighting shine through. Is your motherboard defective? Here's how to identify warning signs

One of the first signs of a possible motherboard problem is the failure of the POST (Power On Self Test), which is carried out when the computer is started. A failed POST may indicate a faulty motherboard. However, it is difficult to determine the exact cause.

Errors such as "Inaccessible Boot Device," defective RAM, or other component errors are possible. Some systems use special acoustic signals to identify which component is causing a problem. You can look up the exact signals online or in the motherboard manual.

Meet Vids, Google's new AI-powered editor for the videos you hate to make

Google thinks highly enough of Vids that it will elevate it into the pantheon of other Google Workspace apps, including Docs, Slides, and Sheets, the company said.

For whatever reason, Google isn't directly challenging Clipchamp, Microsoft's rather delightful video editor, or Canva, another video and graphic content-creation tool that has emerged as a popular alternative and with AI-generated content. Instead, it's essentially treating video as one of those business tasks that has to be done, but doesn't require a lot of creativity — like a training video or customer testimonial.

Vids, then, looks pretty familiar. Ask Vids to create a particular type of video and it surfaces a bunch of templates. The secret appears to be its ability for you to direct (or for it to intelligently choose) bits and pieces of information or documents that you have already created or stored to help create the video. (This isn't exactly clear, since Google hasn't said much about beyond the introductory video, included at the bottom of this story.)

The UI, though, looks fairly standard, with the ability to drag and drop video clips and other content, on top of an audio track.

Razer's Blade 18 laptop pairs a drool-worthy 4K display with Thunderbolt 5

Pricing on the updated, New Razer Blade 18 is apparently somewhat variable: it's listed as starting at $2,899.99, but Razer is apparently selling it for $2,699.99. However, Razer's buying page says that the Razer Blade 18 pricing begins at $3,099.99.

Razer is positioning the Blade 18 as a creator-class laptop, pre-installing Nvidia's content-aligned Nvidia Studio drivers rather than its Game Ready drivers. But make no bones about it: This is a top-of-the-line gaming laptop, too. You'll have the option of either buying a model with a 13th-gen Core i9-13950HX, or a more modern Core i9-14900HX, and pairing it with a Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060, 4070, 4080, or 4090.

Memory options range from 16, 32, or 64GB of DDR5-5600 memory, paired with either a 1TB, 2TB, or a 4TB PCIe 4.0 SSD configuration. (The latter is shipped as a pair of 2TB drives in adjoining M.2 slots.) Razer says that all of the Blade 18s will ship with two available M.2 slots, one of which will be filled with the stock SSD.

Interestingly, one of the Blade 18's features sort of undercuts the other.

Acer's new Helios and Nitro gaming laptops pack all the latest chips

All three new models are fairly standard for Acer designs, boasting new "AI" tech…that doesn't seem to actually add much that you haven't seen elsewhere like filtering out microphone background noise. Something tells me gamers will be more excited by the free month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate that all of them are packing.

Predator Helios Neo 14 The Predator Helios series boasts Acer's most bombastic, out-there designs and new tech. But the newest member of the family, the notably smaller Helios Neo 14, seems to be keeping things pretty button-down. Acer is making a big show of its "AI" powers thanks to the latest Intel Core processors (Ultra 9 185H on the top end, Ultra 5 125H on the base model). But the end result of this NPU-packing platform seems to be the same as every other new laptop this year: noise reduction and video call blurred backgrounds.

Best antivirus software 2024: Keep your PC safe from malware, spyware, and more

We're not suggesting that PC security software is fool-proof, but it does a great job of protecting your computer against harmful malware and ransomware. Most systems come with security software baked into the OS, but this is often the bare minimum you need. Choosing to purchase more robust antivirus software will provide you with features such as an advanced firewall, sandbox environments for suspicious programs, and multi-device protection, among other things.

How do you choose a good antivirus? We've tested a multitude of offerings, including all the big names, so you don't have to! When testing antivirus software, we look for products that strike a balance between excellent protection, a worthwhile selection of features, and minimal performance impact on your PC. Samsung Galaxy owners: Buy this GAN charger for the fastest charges

I miss included chargers

Remember when you paid for a phone and received the best charger in the box? Those days are unfortunately long gone to "save the environment," but that also means that most consumers who don't have a modern charger are left alone wandering through a forest of hundreds of confusing charger choices.

Be confused

Frankly, I'd be surprised if you weren't confused by how to get your Samsung phone to actually use the faster "Super-Fast Charging 2.0" mode since the conditions to get there aren't very straightforward at all.

I could only find mentions of it in two sentences on Samsung's website, where it says: "For super-fast charging, you must have a charging cable that supports adaptive fast charging with a capacity of 45W - 45W TA 5A cable (E-marked)," and: "You will also need a 45W Travel Adapter. Super-fast charging will not function with a standard charger. We recommend using the USB Type-C, 5A charging cable that comes with the 45W charger."

If you're shopping for a third-party charger and cable, Samsung's guidance won't be of much use either. Even worse, Samsung's description doesn't mention the different versions of Super Fast Charging, which contributes to the confusion. I've found chargers on Amazon that mention 45 watts and Samsung Super Fast Charging, but a closer loo

We love Samsung's superb 2-in-1 AMOLED laptop. Now it's $800 off

Not only is this laptop a convertible, meaning you can flip the screen all the way around, but it also comes equipped with powerful hardware. When we reviewed this configuration back in 2022, we found it to be an outstanding performer, so we gave it four out of five stars and an Editor's Choice badge. My colleague Mark Hachman sums it up best:

Underneath the hood, you'll find an Intel Core i7-1260P CPU as well as 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage, so it should be able handle everything from intensive workloads to everyday activities like pilfering through your full inbox or rocking out to your favorite musician on Spotify. Got an older D-Link NAS? 92,000 of them are at high risk of getting hacked

As reported by Ars Technica, this exploit was discovered two weeks ago by security researcher netsecfish. On Monday, the information was publicly released to warn impacted owners, as D-Link will not be issuing firmware updates to patch the vulnerabilities—and security organizations like GreyNoise and Shadowserver began observing use of the exploit early Sunday universal time (UTC). D-Link has also issued its own advisory summarizing the situation.

The more major vulnerability (CVE-2024-3272) is a backdoor account accessible through credentials baked into the NAS unit's firmware. It has

How to avoid buying a PC case that's too small or too large

Smaller cases may seem attractive at first glance because they take up less space and are often cheaper. However, depending on the configuration, the challenge comes shortly after purchase when the expansion options for RAM, SSDs, and PCIe expansion cards are very limited.

Windows 11 is holding gaming handhelds back

While the former aren't free of issues, there has been tons more criticism recently about the latter category as gamers grapple with a handful of different problems they encounter. The main cause? Windows just isn't optimized for these devices.

Why Windows is hurting third-party handhelds Don't get me wrong, you can just as easily play Baldur's Gate 3 on the ROG Ally as you can on the Steam Deck; the ability to play games isn't the issue. Looking at Windows based handhelds on their hardware merits alone, they're almost all impressive systems, with powerful hardware, decent battery lives, and displays worthy of some of the best graphics on portable gaming devices.

Best online backup 2024: iDrive, Backblaze, Livedrive, and more

While we always recommend keeping a local backup for quick restores (see our roundup of the best Windows backup software for desktop solutions), uploading your data to an online backup service can be a reliable way to cover your bases. After all, the "backup rule of three" exists for a reason.

The good news for consumers is that there are many commendable options, each offering unique selling points. Our primary concern here is backup, but we do note other roles that a service can fulfill, such as sharing capabilities, multi-device support, and emergency-restore options.

Why you should trust us: It's in our name, PCWorld. Our reviewers have been testing PC hardware, software, and services for decades. Our backup evaluations are thorough and rigorous, testing the promises and limitations of every product — from performance to the practicalities of regular use. As PC users ourselves, we know what makes a product stand out. Only the best online backup services make this list. For more about our testing process, scroll to the bottom of this article.

You might wonder why you don't see services like Google Drive, One Drive, or Dropbox here. Those are more accurately defined as cloud storage. Besides typically lacking a desktop client, and offeri

Best external drives 2024: Backup, storage, and portability

While any of these would be a great reason to pick up an external drive, the advantages of having reliable backup is the number-one reason your setup isn't complete without one. Why? Chances are you have important data on your PC that you can't afford to lose. To protect that data you'll want to do two things: store it off-site on the cloud if possible and back it up to an external drive. This way you ensure your data is completely safe should anything go wrong with your computer.

While we highly recommend that you consider cloud storage as a backup option, restoring from local storage is generally far, far faster than pulling your data down from the cloud. Therefore, an external drive should be your primary hedge against disaster.

Why you should trust us: We're PCWorld. We've been putting computer hardware through its paces for decades. We've seen it all and we know how to root out a drive's strengths and weaknesses, using a combination of rigorous benchmark testing and real-world hands-on use. Below we offer our expert recommendations on the best external drives for everything from blazing-fast performance, to budget options, to portability, and more.

Pick up this curved 1440p Dell gaming monitor for just $250

The Dell S2722DGM has a 27-inch panel, a resolution of 2560×1440, a maximum brightness of 500 nits, and a response time of 1ms. Given those numbers, the picture should be both crisp and vibrant, serving as a lovely backdrop for your favorite games. This monitor also comes with AMD FreeSync, a technology that's designed to reduce stuttering during gameplay. It achieves this by syncing up the monitor's refresh rate with your PC's GPU. This is good news for anyone that loves those intensive first-person-shooter games.

This is a solid deal for a 1400p curved gaming monitor, but I don't see it lasting long. Get it now before the deal vanishes into the nether.

Dell XPS vs. Inspiron vs. Latitude laptops: Which should you buy?

Because it's not immediately obvious how laptops from these brands differ, I'll help you decode their strengths, so you'll have a better idea of which Dell laptop to buy for your next laptop purchase.

The best use cases for the different brands Dell's laptops may share functionality across brand lines, but you can count on each brand also having unique characteristics that make it especially good at one of three things: work, play, or entertainment.

That's a bit of an oversimplification, but in the purest terms the best use-case scenario breaks down as such: gaming for XPS, productivity for Latitude, and home and personal use for Inspiron laptops.

We're not saying you can't game on an Inspiron

How to work on your laptop with a migraine

I don't suffer from migraines, but my wife does, and has for years. Obviously, the last thing you want to do is stare at a screen. But if you have to, these are the tips that my wife swears by to make life more bearable.

1.) Isolate external lights Migraine sufferers can experience severe light sensitivity, which is one of the triggers that we're trying to reduce. But migraines can also be triggered by light on one side of the head. My wife tries to reduce the ambient light, but also either orient it so it's hitting the less sensitive side of her head or at least strikes both sides evenly.

Absurd deal! Get this $650 RTX-powered HP gaming laptop before it's gone

The HP Victus 1550fa-100 (just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?) packs a 15.6-inch, 1080p display with an IPS panel, which won't win any speed awards, but is more color-accurate than your usual gaming display. Other features include 512GB of SSD storage, full backlit keyboard with a number pad, and a roomy 70 watt-hour battery. Ports are generous, with two USB-A, one USB-C, full-sized HDMI for easy connection to an external display, and a full-sized SD card slot.

If this Victus laptop has an Achilles heel, it's the 8GB of DDR4 RAM, which is pretty skimpy for anything running Windows 11. But based on a quick YouTube search, it looks like both SO-DIMM slots are open on the motherboard, so a few screws is all that separates you from a much-needed RAM upgrade. That's an option that many laptops — even gaming laptops — no longer have.

I'd go with
