It used to be that you could pay for a retail version of Windows 11 and expect it to be ad-free, but those days are apparently finito. The latest update to Windows 11 (KB5036980) comes out this week and includes ads for apps in the "recommended" section of the Start Menu, one of the most oft-used parts of the OS.
"The Recommended section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps," according to the release notes. "These apps come from a small set of curated developers."
The app suggestions are enabled by default, but you can restore your previously pristine Windows experience if you've installed the update, fortunately. To do so, go into Settings and select Personalization Start and switch the "Show recommendations for tips, app promotions and more" toggle to "off."

The Corsair K70 Pro Mini Wireless RGB (hoochimama what a mouthful) packs most of the features you'd expect from a high-end board, including high-quality PBT doubleshot keycaps and dual-mode wireless with 2.4GHz dongle for gaming and Bluetooth for mobile devices. It also has a really satisfying aluminum case, and comes with speedy Cherry MX switches from the famous German switch maker.
RGB and sub-1ms wireless speed are a given for Corsair keyboards at this point. But for my money, the best feature is the hot-swap sockets, which allow you to pop in any MX-compatible switches that you like. That makes the K70 a great platform for customization, both for keycaps with its standard layout and for typing or gaming feel. X just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it's building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named X TV wants to be "your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen." By high-quality entertainment, X likely means that one Tucker Carlson video where he's really impressed by grocery carts in Russia. That's not a joke. Carlson is featured prominently in the little teaser video.

X CEO and marketing robot Linda Yaccarino promises "real-time" content and wide availability, but other than that details are scanter than scant. There's some corporate speak nonsense about AI, of course, and boasts about "effortless casting" from a mobile device to a TV. Wait, I thought this was a TV app? So it's also a mobile app that casts to a TV? Is there another word for less than half-baked? Does raw work?
In other words, we don't know much. This is X. All we get are word salads that don't really mean anything and then, one day, the app may or may not actually appear. If it does, it's likely to be hopelessly broken. That sounds harsh, but there's plenty of proof-laden pudding to go around. We got receipts.

According to Taiwan analyst company TrendForce, storage makers Western Digital and now Seagate have sent letters to customers warning them that the companies will be raising prices on hard drives. WD's letter said that it would be raising prices on SSDs, too.
"[D]emand recovery continues across several segments of our business and our reduced manufacturing capacity is limiting our ability to meet all of our customers' demand and is resulting in longer lead times," the letter says, signed by BS Teh, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Seagate. "As a result, we will be implementing price increases effective immediately on new orders and for demand that is over and above previously committed volumes."
WD sent a similar letter earlier this month. In it, WD warned that is seeing "higher than expected demand across its entire flash and hard drive portfolio resulting in supply constraints.

Meta just announced a major update for its AI assistant platform, Meta AI, which has been built using the long-awaited open source Llama 3 large language model (LLM). The company says it's "now the most intelligent AI assistant you can use for free." As for use case scenarios, the company touts the ability to help users study for tests, plan dinners and schedule nights out. You know the drill. It's an AI chatbot.
Meta AI, however, has expanded into just about every nook and cranny throughout the company's entire portfolio, after a test run with Instagram DMs last week. It's still available with Instagram, but now users can access it on Messenger, Facebook feeds and Whatsapp. The chatbot also has a dedicated web portal at, wait for it, meta.ai. You don't need a company login to use it this way, though it won't generate images. Those recently-released Ray-Ban smart glasses also integrate with the bot, with Quest headset integration coming soon.
On the topic of image generation, Meta says it's now much faster and will produce images as you type. It also handles custom animated GIFs, which is pretty cool.
