Frontline Ukrainians Fear New Aid From U.S. Will Be a Disaster
Anatolii Stepanov/AFP via Getty ImagesKHARKIV, Ukraine—After months of infighting on Capitol Hill, President Joe Biden has finally been able to sign off on a huge new $61 billion military aid bill for Ukraine. Delays to the bill, which got bogged down in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, were widely blamed for impacting Kyiv's ability to defend itself from Russian advances.

After its passage last week, some members of the House waved Ukrainian flags while others cheered in celebration that Ukraine will soon receive new weapons ahead of Russia's expected counteroffensive. Signing it into law at a White House ceremony on Wednesday, Biden promised the arms shipments would begin immediately and hailed what he called "a good day for world peace."

The reaction here, near the front lines of the war, felt very different.

Hamas Releases Video of Injured American-Israeli Hostage
Hannah McKayHamas released a video of American-Israeli hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin on Wednesday, as Israel's brutal military campaign in Gaza passes its two hundredth day, with dozens of hostages still missing.

Goldberg-Polin was among those in attendance at the Nova Music Festival, only a few miles away from Israel's border with Gaza. In the video, Goldberg-Polin is missing his left hand and arm below the elbow, which is consistent with a report that his arm was blown off while trying to throw grenades out of a bunker while he and other attendees hid from insurgents.

While the video is undated, Goldberg-Polin said that he'd been abandoned by the Israeli government for "almost 200 days." As of Wednesday, the hostages were kidnapped 201 days ago.

"Killing People Around the Clock": Dr. Mustafa Barghouti & Muhammad Shehada on 6 Months of War on Gaza
Israel's war on Gaza hit the six-month mark on Sunday, a grim milestone. Over 33,100 Palestinians have been killed, including 14,000 children. Nearly 76,000 have been injured, and tens of thousands are missing. About 1.7 million people have been displaced, and the United Nations is warning that famine is imminent. Meanwhile, Palestinians are returning to Khan Younis after the Israeli military announced it had withdrawn its ground troops from the area four months after invading it, leaving Gaza's second-largest city almost unrecognizable, with much of it turned to rubble. Israel is also still vowing to invade Rafah, Gaza's southernmost city, which is sheltering more than half of Gaza's population. Speaking from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian physician and politician Dr. Mustafa Barghouti says growing outrage against Israel, including among some Western leaders, is largely due to regular people who have been protesting in solidarity with Palestinians. "We have to thank the people of these countries," says Barghouti. We also speak with writer Muhammad Shehada, chief of communications at Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor and a columnist at The Forward. He says the last six months have exposed the Israeli military's "complete disregard for human life," with routine evidence of summary executions, torture and other crimes that rarely get reported in corporate Western media. "They're not even trying to hide it," says Shehada.
