It is ironic that the ones who will be hurt the most by this tax bill are the lower middle class, many of whom were trump voters. It is not surprising that the amnesia administration has ‘forgotten’ virtually all of the little hands guy’s populist ideas. Republican voters thought they were voting for something different, but they didn’t get it. The problem is that trump has never had a strategy, plan or vision.
Any tax bill will create winners and losers. This tax bill was crafted with the idea of providing tax cuts to the richest Americans and corporations. Then they looked for ways to pay for some of these tax cuts. Well, where else but the middle class is available to pay for it, now and in the future?
Just as our farm policy provides cheap food at the cost of local, small farms. Our trade policy provides cheap imports at the cost of native-born, less skilled workers. Both need changes. American workers who compete with very low-paid workers abroad should be given much more extensive transition support. A conservative-populist agenda could include federal wage subsidies, as Senator Marco Rubio has proposed for Puerto Rico’s workers, to maintain decent living standards for America’s growing class of low-wage workers.
American jobs for American citizens also needs to become more than a slogan. The new tax bill should include provisions that give employers credits in addition to the current deduction for employee compensation to legal United States residents. A second provision should provide additional tax credits for wage increases above national averages for workers earning below-average wages.
Entitlement reform should result in means testing and reducing the benefits of those with large 401(k) accounts.
First you need to honestly establish a vision of where you want to bring the country, and then design the policies to get you there. trump said that he wanted to help the under educated and unemployed. So far he hasn’t.
