Trump Fears The Minnesota Chaos Makes Him Look Weak
Stephen Maturen/GettyThe coronavirus pandemic stole from President Donald Trump his most prized political possession: a booming U.S. economy. Now racial unrest in Minnesota threatens to steal his second-most-prized one: an image of power and stability that he can project to supporters and adversaries alike.

Hours into a spate of destruction and arrests in Minneapolis after the police killing of an unarmed black man, Trump was already threatening to send in the National Guard and warning that "looters" in the city would be shot—employing a phrase popularized by a former Miami police chief famous for "tough-on-crime" policies that targeted citizens of color.

Trump walked back the latter statement a few hours later, saying he only meant that looters could end up shooting people, not that they should be shot. "I've heard that phrase for a long time. I don't know where it came from or where it originated," he declared later. "I wouldn't know a thing like that."

Trevor Noah: ‘Police In America Are Looting Black Bodies'
After broadcasting from his New York apartment every weeknight for the past two months, Trevor Noah went on hiatus this week. But he couldn't wait until Monday to share his take on the protests that have followed the police killing of George Floyd.

In a long, no-frills, joke-free video, shot vertically, The Daily Show host connected the dots between Amy Cooper, Ahmaud Arbery and now Floyd. His most impassioned commentary, however, came when he addressed the backlash to the looting and riots that have happened in response.

To those who are telling protesters, "You do not loot and you do not burn. This is not how our society is built," Noah said that if "society is a contract" then that contract is "only as strong as the people who are abiding by it." He asked "what vested interest" black people have in maintaining that social contract when police aren't holding up their end of the deal.

Team Biden on Klobuchar: ‘We Need to Avoid Her'
Ron Jenkins/GettyIn recent weeks, Sen. Amy Klobuchar has positioned herself as a leading contender in the race to join former Vice President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket. But growing civil unrest in her home state of Minnesota in response to the death of an unarmed black man at the hands of a white police officer—and renewed scrutiny of her record as the top prosecutor in the state's largest county—appears to have severely hampered her ambition to be the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee.

"Vertiginous," a campaign adviser said in a one-word text, describing Klobuchar's fall in the rankings of potential running mates.

The three-term senator's drop has been so swift that a planned Minnesota digital event with Dr. Jill Biden and coronavirus first-responders scheduled for Friday was pulled, according to a source familiar with the campaign's deliberations, "partly because we need to avoid her."
