John Oliver Makes the Case for Impeaching Trump: ‘Nobody Is Above the Law'
HBOOn Sunday night, John Oliver dedicated the main story of Last Week Tonight to laying out the case for impeaching President Trump.

Though impeachment isn't popular with the public, as a majority of Americans currently do not support impeachment proceedings—a point House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made time and time again—Oliver argued that most of the public isn't aware of the contents of the Mueller Report, and impeachment could be a way of informing the public of it, thus swaying public opinion.

"It is true that many people don't fully understand what impeachment involves, so we thought tonight might be a good time to discuss what it is, why it may be warranted, and what the risks might be in carrying it out," Oliver said.

And then, they did what they've come to do best: shrug.

Inside the caucus, there was a sense of dejection the morning after ABC News released footage of an interview in which Trump said he would not reach out to the FBI if a foreign government tried to help his campaign. Members and aides admitted they have grown jaded and increasingly convinced that leadership will not move forward with an impeachment inquiry regardless of the ethically dubious and legally problematic steps the president takes.

"The Mueller report laid out in black and white the multitude of crimes created under the Trump regime," said an aide to a Democratic member. "That was more than enough evidence to move forward with impeachment. So if that did not suffice for Pelosi, I don't know what will."
