Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards Defies Trump Opposition to Win Re-Election in Louisiana
Jonathan Bachman/GettyLouisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, has won re-election in the state's runoff election, defeating Republican challenger Eddie Rispone and fending off an effort by President Trump to turn the office red.

Rispone's defeat came just hours after Trump threw one last endorsement his way before the polls closed.

The race was widely seen as a test of Trump's own popularity amid an impeachment inquiry against him.

With Marie Yovanovitch, Trump Goes Nuclear in His War on Women
Donald Trump has attacked so many women in so many ways for their looks, their age, or their position it can be hard to keep track. He called Hillary Clinton a "nasty woman," Omarosa Manigault "a dog," and Rosie O'Donnell "a fat pig"; he said Megan Kelly had "blood coming out of her wherever" and claimed that "low I.Q. Crazy Mika" Brezenski had been "bleeding badly from a face-lift" at a party he hosted at his home. And on, and on, and on, with reporters and other women of color frequently singled out for attacks.

But the president took his attacks on strong, accomplished and independent women even further in his attacks on his own U.S. ambassador, Marie Yovanovitch, telling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that "the former ambassador from the United States, the woman, was bad news." That was in the now infamous phone call that led to the impeachment hearings that began this week, and Friday, in the middle of Yovanovitch's testimony there, he tweeted that "everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad." That was bad enough to even draw rebukes from Republican Congresswomen Elise Stefiniak and Liz Cheney.

The real issue, though, goes beyond the attitude of President Grab Them By the P*ssy to the way the Republican party Trump leads has embraced his attitude toward women and his disrespect for them. The modern GOP is a party for white men, led by white men. There are only 13 Republican women in the House of Representatives, and eight senators—and just 660 Republican women in state legislatures, down from 705 in 2018. The party of family values has at its helm a misogynist who has been accused of sexual assault and even rape by a staggering number of women.

Russians Delighted as Impeachment Confirms Trump Doesn't ‘Give a S--t About Ukraine'
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily BeastAs Russia's state media watch impeachment proceedings against U.S. President Donald J. Trump they're loving what they see. They don't think the man they brag about getting elected is in much danger. They listen in delight as Republicans parrot conspiracy theories first launched by  Russians. And they gloat about the way Trump removed U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, because they blame her for promoting democratic "color revolutions" that weakened Moscow's hold on the former Soviet empire. Best of all, from the Kremlin's point of view, they see Trump pushing Ukraine back into the Russian fold.

So while the historical impeachment inquiry, after two days of public hearings, has been deemed by some pundits to lack "pizzazz," the Kremlin is  having a ball. Instead of disseminating their usual conspiracy theories, the Russians watch gleefully as the Republicans do that for them. From the long-debunked "Crowdstrike" cyber plot positioning Ukraine as the fall guy for what undoubtedly was Russian interference in the 2016 elections, to anti-Semitic conspiracy theories centering around Jewish financier and philanthropist George Soros, rivers of Russian dezinformatsi

State Dept. Aide Says He Overheard Sondland Tell Trump Ukraine President Would Do ‘Anything'
Yara Nardi/ReutersU.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland was overheard telling President Trump that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was willing to do "anything" Trump asked him to do, including "the investigation," according to the opening statement of a new witness in the impeachment inquiry against Trump.

David Holmes, a State Department aide who worked under U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor, testified in a closed-door hearing before Congress on Friday. According to his statement to lawmakers obtained by CNN, Sondland told the president that Zelensky "loves (his) ass" in a phone call at a restaurant in Kyiv.

"I then heard President Trump ask, ‘So, he's gonna do the investigation?' Ambassador Sondland replied that ‘he's gonna do it,' adding that President Zelensky will do ‘anything you ask him to,'" Holmes reportedly told lawmakers.
