The Game Everyone's Playing During Coronavirus Quarantine to Keep Them Sane
NintendoChaos. Fear of disease, a virulent and deadly virus the likes of which America hasn't seen in a century. A political system running on tilt, our response seemingly held together by a single doctor who seems like he could be fired any minute. The powerful and rich, openly leering at an ailing stock market and tapping their feet, wondering when we can "Get Back to Work" so they can generate more money to throw in their bank vault. Cultural institutions living in fear of what time off will do to them, people getting laid off—temporarily or otherwise—left and right. The world sucks right now, and the only thing you can really do about that is not leave the house unless you need groceries.

But what if there was a place where none of this was happening? An island getaway where you live in a tent, pick fruit, catch bugs, take pictures, go fishing. No death, no disease, no imminent threats, where the only thing standing in the way of pure happiness is weeds that cropped up overnight and a pesky raccoon?

Through an act of cosmic coincidence, the blessed Nintendo Corporation, inventors and shepherds of Mario, Zelda and other venerable gaming icons, have delivered that exact thing to their smash-hit Nintendo Switch system right at the point when people would be in desperate need of a liberatory, pain-free, highly-expressive experience. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the long-awaited new entry in the company's popular Ani

Trump's Coronavirus Lies Are an Infection. This Is the Only Cure.
Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast / Photos GettyPresident Donald Trump lies as a matter of habit, but in the midst of the pandemic his lies can kill. He touted a malaria drug as a coronavirus cure, and a fearful couple ingested a fish tank cleaner bearing a similar name; one of them is dead.

Now Trump is asserting that "real people" should join in his call to "open up our country" by Easter and "get back to work ASAP," in patent disregard of the public health risks of returning to "normal" in the midst of a pandemic.

Given that the words of the President of the United States present a very real risk to the lives of many Americans, particularly in "red" states chock full of Trump supporters, what can be done? The only answer is relentlessly and rapidly administering doses of the truth.

Trump Says He's Doing a Hell of a Job Getting Medical Supplies. Reality Says Otherwise.
After weeks of resisting pleas from governors and healthcare workers to force private companies to ramp up production of medical supplies to help combat the coronavirus crisis, President Donald Trump on Friday appeared to hint that he may have changed his mind.

But the way in which he did so—a proclamation by tweet with a one-letter abbreviation for the law he was invoking—sparked mass confusion within and outside of his administration. And shortly after, administration officials suggested that nothing new had changed.

White House officials told The Daily Beast Friday afternoon that despite Trump's statements, the president had yet to implement the Defense Production Act—a law that allows him to demand private companies ramp up domestic production of supplies—and that he was still relying on volunteers to come forward and help with production.

Trump: I Don't Think Governors ‘Need' the Medical Equipment They're Begging For
As medical professionals and local authorities across the country sound the alarm over shortages of life-saving equipment due to a surge in coronavirus patients, President Donald Trump on Thursday shrugged off their warnings because, as he put it, "a lot of equipment is being asked for that I don't think they will need."

Calling into Fox News host and unofficial presidential adviser Sean Hannity's show on Thursday, Trump boasted about his administration's response to the crippling pandemic, despite the fact that the United States now has the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the world.

Asked by Hannity about his general refusal to enforce the Defense Production Act to ramp up production of needed supplies like masks and ventilators, the president insisted it hadn't been necessary because there's been "tremendous spirit" from corporations that he says have stepped up. This prompted him to then take some pointed shots at Democratic governors who've criticized the federal response.
