Dems' Impeachment Plan: Don't Repeat Mueller Mistakes
Pete Marovich/GettyThe House Democrats leading the impeachment inquiry into President Trump are facing a critical new test this week: making sure that their slate of public hearings—a bona fide national media event that will be watched by millions—lives up to the hype and clearly communicates their case for Trump's wrongdoing to the American people.

Looming large over Democrats as they plan, though, is the example of what happened the last time they faced the same test. Less than four months ago, Special Counsel Robert Mueller testified before the House Judiciary Committee about the findings of his two-year investigation into Trump's contact with Russia in 2016 and its aftermath.

The July 24 hearing was as intensely hyped as any Capitol Hill event in recent years, carried live across TV and dissected in countless articles. Ultimately, after hours of halting testimony from Mueller—who barely ventured outside the content of his report—it was clear the day didn't meet the impossibly high expectations. Republicans gleefully proclaimed it a dud, a conclusion many Democrats privately echoed.

Ukraine Wants to Set the Record Straight on Taylor Testimony
Carlos Jasso/ReutersWhen Ambassador Bill Taylor testified to congressional Democrats' closed-door impeachment inquiry, he created huge headaches for the Trump administration by detailing their efforts to push Ukraine to probe former Vice President Joe Biden's son.

But Taylor also made some problems for Ukraine's president. And now, aides in President Volodymyr Zelensky's office are going on the record to push back. The episode shows just how complicated relations between the U.S. and Ukraine have become as the Trump impeachment inquiry unfolds.

In his testimony last month, Taylor-America's top diplomat in Kyiv-implied that two Zelensky aides blamed Ukraine, rather than Russia, for the long-running, bloody war in the eastern part of the country. Taylor's words weren't crystal-clear, but the comment set off a political firestorm in Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatist fighters have killed thousands of Ukrainians. Critics of the country's newly elected president, Volodymyr Zelensky, seized on Taylor's testimony as evidence that Zelensky's team is running interference for Russia.
