Trump Finally Slaps Google, and Protects Democracy
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/GettySometimes Donald Trump does the right thing, even if it may be for the wrong reasons. His Justice Department's late-term assault on Google for its monopolistic tyranny over search and digital advertising in precisely what is needed. Some may paint this as the last desperate act of a fading tyrant, but in reality it may be the most important move to protect democracy in recent years.

The anti-trust suit, filed just weeks before the election, is just the latest example of the growing gap between the tech oligarchy and Trump on issues including the H1-B visas big tech depends on to keep labor costs down, web censorship, and, of course, Trump's trade war with Silicon Valley's close allies in China.

With the prospect of a Biden presidency looming, Google and the other tech monopolies, may simply be willing to wait to try and regain control of the national agenda and recover at least some of the vast political sway they enjoyed under Barack Obama. It's likely that Trump was acting not to protect free markets and democracy but to punish his perceived foes who in his view have unfairly supported his opponent not only with their contributions and their expertise but also with their policies and algorithms.

Coronavirus Is Surging in Wisconsin. People Are Early Voting in Force Anyway.
Photo by Scott Olson/Getty ImagesMILWAUKEE—Wisconsin is now a national coronavirus hot spot, with more cases identified so far in Milwaukee County than anywhere else in the state. But that didn't stop throngs of voters here from heading to the polls on Tuesday, the first day of early voting in a hotly contested swing state with a recent history of both pandemic fear at the ballot box and far-right violence.

Lines as long as two hours were reported at some of Milwaukee's early voting sites, and Claire Woodall-Vogg, executive director of the city's Election Commission, said lines were forming at all of the 13 sites open Tuesday. A 14th site will open Wednesday, and two more are available by appointment only for voters with disabilities who can't use any of the others.

After an April primary that saw the city operate just five packed "voting centers" thanks to a lack of poll workers, things were off to a much smoother start. City locations were enforcing social distancing, while providing one-time use pencils for registration, plexiglass protected stations, and digital screens to cast votes.

The Republicans Enabling Trump's Dangerous COVID-19 Comeback Tour
Photo Illustration by Kristen Hazzard/The Daily Beast/Photos GettyIowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has long refused to mandate masks in her state. What was new when she appeared with Donald Trump in Des Moines last week was his own recent case of COVID-19, and with it a new frontier of campaign-trail coronavirus recklessness.

Reynolds was visibly enthusiastic to be speaking to the large outdoor crowd at a rally for the president's re-election on Wednesday. As she took the stage before Trump spoke, with state data showing Iowa at a new high for COVID-19 hospitalized patients, the governor could be seen on a livestream of the rally maskless, tossing hats into the audience before intoning, "This is an amazing, amazing crowd."

"I am proud to be a governor that puts her trust in our people because they are responsible, they are resilient and they will do the right thing," Reynolds said soon after.
