Trump Eyes Accused ‘Quack' Dr. Oz for Coronavirus Advice
Photo Illustration by Lyne Lucien/The Daily Beast/GettyAs the global pandemic and a staggering economic crisis swells, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the controversial celebrity doctor, has been advising senior Trump administration officials on coronavirus-related matters. Oz has even caught Donald Trump's attention with the celebrity doctor's numerous appearances on the president's favorite TV channel, The Daily Beast has learned.

In the past couple of weeks, President Trump began more and more hearing about and watching Oz, now a Fox News regular, discuss hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug that Trump aggressively touted as a coronavirus treatment, much to the dismay of various medical experts and scientists. Over these two weeks, the president had specifically made a point of telling aides that he was interested in what Oz had to say, and that he wished to speak to the much-maligned television personality, according to two people familiar with the president's requests. It is unclear if Trump has spoken on the phone with Oz lately, as he told aides that he wished to do so.

The ‘Let-Them-Eat-Cake' Lockdown Diaries
Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily BeastPARIS—"I wasn't able to sleep last night," began acclaimed French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani's "Journal du confinement" (lockdown diary) in the French daily Le Monde. "From my bedroom window I watch the dawn break over the hills. The grass covered in frost, the first buds appearing on the branches of the trees..."

Several days before President Emmanuel Macron announced a nationwide lockdown on March 16 in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the prize-winning author of the international bestseller Chanson Douce (Lullaby) left Paris and holed up in her country house with her family. From there, she kept busy writing, entertaining her children and, like many of us in France, reflecting on the sudden, disorienting end to normal life.

"Everything has stopped," she wrote. "Like a game of musical chairs. The record goes silent, you have to sit, to no longer move… suddenly the carousel stops turning."

Donald Trump's In-Person Voting Demand is Obscenely Hypocritical, and Worse
In that way he has of saying out loud what many believe but won't admit, Donald Trump made no pretense of his fear of vote by mail, describing why Republicans opposed mandated vote by mail in earlier versions of the $2 trillion emergency relief bill, despite the public health issues in sending voters to the polls in the midst of a pandemic:

"They had levels of voting, that if you ever agreed to it you'd never have a Republican elected in this country again, they had things in there about election days, and what you do… and it was totally crazy."

To make this a perfect Trump moment, he himself has requested an absentee ballot for the Republican presidential primary in Florida.
