How the coronavirus pandemic jump-started efforts to free American held by Iran
In a bizarre twist of fate, Michael White, the US Navy veteran released from Iranian custody this week, may owe his freedom to the deadly coronavirus outbreak. When he and an Iranian being held in the US came down with the virus it presented an opportunity to kick-start delicate negotiations that ultimately culminated in his release.

Too Scared to Go to the Movies? Here are Some of the Country's Best Drive-Ins
Loic Venance/GettyAs a child growing up in the '60s in Indiana, few things were as sweet as a Saturday night at the drive-in. It was a cheap escape and quality family time. You didn't have to worry about what to wear. In fact, the littlest ones often were in PJs so that as soon as we got home, they could immediately be put to b-e-d. There was something about piling into the backseat with sisters, cozy, comfortable, watching the big screen, which was way better than TV. Better still, if it was a pay week and we got to hit the concession stand. If not, the jug of Kool-Aid and homemade popcorn was just as good.

With the coronavirus, that slice of Americana so popular in the 50s and 60s, is making a comeback. "Everything old is new again," says Michael Kilgore, who runs Carload.com and is author of Drive-Ins of Route 66.

During its peak there were some 4,000 drive-ins. As of October of 2019, there were 305, according to the United Drive-In Theater Owners Association. The vast open spaces are ideal for social distancing.  The attraction isn't only movies, but drive-ins have also become venues for concerts, graduations and business events.

GOP Gov Candidate Actually Likens His State's COVID Lockdown to George Floyd's Murder
JASON REDMOND/AFP via GettyThe Republican candidate for governor in Washington, Tim Eyman, repeatedly invoked the image of George Floyd's death while attempting to argue that the state should lift its coronavirus-related public health restrictions.

Speaking in a Facebook live video posted over the weekend, Eyman said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) "has his knee on the neck" of residents in the state who "he deems non-essential." Eyman also said the remarks in an appearance in the city of Pasco on Tuesday.

On Thursday, he did it again, several times, posting a 20-minute video embedded in a lengthy fundraising email.

Chris Hayes Slams Cuomo and de Blasio for Trying to ‘Gaslight the Public' on Cops Beating Protesters
MSNBC host Chris Hayes took New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to task on Thursday night for falsely claiming that New York police hadn't beaten protesters despite video evidence to the contrary.

In recent days, several videos have surfaced on social media showing NYPD officers whacking peaceful protesters with batons, including a "horrifying" viral clip of three officers bludgeoning a cyclist on Wednesday night. The latter video prompted widespread outrage—except from the governor and mayor.

Noting that Wednesday night's New York protest over George Floyd's death devolved into violence because "the NYPD started beating people," Hayes went on to highlight several incidents captured on video by protesters and journalists.
