Not for repeatedly revealing himself as an unethical political partisan who poisons the credibility of the court—I'm disgusted with that, and agree with those who are demanding his recusal in cases involving former President Donald Trump.

But Alito's latest scandal—flying the "Appeal to Heaven" flag at his New Jersey beach house—makes me grateful, because it might help save our imperiled American democracy.

This proud and undeniable embrace of the extreme Christian nationalist movement sounds an alarm for a nation that has been sleepwalking into theocracy. Coming from a sitting Supreme Court justice, it's like an air raid siren. And given how far we've gone down the road to theocracy, that's probably what it's going to take.

Trump Faces Another Anxious Day as Jurors Resume Deliberations
Doug Mills/ReutersThe jury in Donald Trump's hush money trial will continue deliberating Thursday morning after failing to reach a verdict on the first day of their private discussions to decide the former president's fate.

The 12 members of the panel spent several hours deliberating for the first time Wednesday afternoon. No one knows how long the deliberations will take before jurors will reach a consensus—meaning Trump can now do nothing but wait to find out if he'll become the first former American president to become a convicted felon.

The current presumptive Republican nominee faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 made by Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election.

Trump Goes to Bat for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito in New Interview
James Devaney/GC ImagesDonald Trump on Wednesday night heaped praise onto Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, along with others on the recently scandal-scarred panel.

In a wide-ranging and apparently last-minute interview with right-wing podcaster Dan Bongino, Trump also made his usual pronouncements about the "sham" hush money trial in Manhattan—which is now in jury deliberations. The former president complained about his gag order, slammed the "unbelievable" judge ("they got themselves a beauty") and even took aim at the jury for requesting Judge Juan Merchan to repeat his instructions.

"It's very confusing to people, the bottom line is there is no crime," Trump claimed, noting, "it's been good for poll numbers any way."

In Mexico, millions of voters are poised to elect the first woman president in the country's history when they cast their ballots on Sunday. Voters will be choosing between front-runners Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, and Xóchitl Gálvez, a former senator; and a third candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who is trailing further behind in the polls. The landmark moment has filled many with hope as Mexico has one of the highest rates of gender violence and femicides in Latin America. "This is the primary contradiction for Mexico. You're going to elect a woman, but you still haven't resolved the fact that women are being murdered at the rate of about 10 to 11 every single day," says Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, who interviewed both Sheinbaum and Gálvez. Hinojosa says the two front-runners are the result of "decadeslong work by feminists in Mexico, along with feminists all over Latin America, pushing for equality."

That was Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's explanation to two senators for how an upside down American flag ended up on the front lawn of his Virginia home.

In letters to members of Congress in which he rejected calls to recuse himself from cases involving former President Donald Trump and the Jan. 6 insurrection, Alito pointed a public finger at his wife of almost 30 years for putting him in an awkward position of defending himself against accusations of bias. In fact, he insisted, he didn't even know about the second questionable "Appeal to Heaven" flag that his wife hung outside their vacation home.
