Lead times of nine to 12 or even 18 months. Costs rising by 35%, 45%, even 50% to 200%. More than halfway through 2026, the market for IT infrastructure that's crucial for enterprise projects, including those involving artificial intelligence, is strapped.
Memory is at the root of the shortages. Memory prices "have risen by 50% to 200%, resulting in PC prices increasing by 35% to 45% and some server prices rising over 125%," according to Jon Forest, VP analyst at Gartner. Network switches also need memory, albeit in lesser amounts than servers, so they are not immune, with prices and lead times likewise rising dramatically.
Industry experts agree that most of the issues stem from hyperscalers gobbling up memory capacity, which trickles down to servers, storage systems, and networking devices. But while the source of the problem may be new, supply chain disruptions are far from unprecedented.
As a result, industry insiders are not short on advice on how best to deal with the situation, with tips including making better use of what you have, considering options beyond your usual scope, and lots of planning with your vendors and internal finance teams.

Apple is in the process of tweaking its business models to cope with the unyielding memory price and availability crisis. Its response is now emerging across multiple fronts.

The company's recently-introduced Apple Upgrade scheme in partnership with Klarna is a smart response to the reality that as devices inevitably become more expensive, consumers will shift from outright ownership to flexible lease and financing arrangements. With its partnership, Apple continues to generate revenue while also maximizing the likelihood customers will return the product at EOL, more about which later.
Samsung and Google have introduced similar schemes. "Financing models already dominant in India and Africa are now poised to reshape the US and European markets," said CCS Insight in a presentation exploring the consequences of the memory shortage.

It's likely that many enterprises have created — or are at least considering — AI policies that clearly lay out approved AI tools and their uses, set up training programs for employees to help them use the tools in their jobs, and establish guardrails around those systems to avoid issues such as security vulnerabilities and data bias.
But how many of these policies have received the blessing of employees? It's a key question, because many workers are highly wary of AI.
They worry that it will cost them their jobs, either by taking over their work or because companies will cut jobs and use the savings to fund investments in AI research and infrastructure. They worry about AI-powered performance tracking software impacting raises and promotions. They worry about AI screening of job applications for future roles.
Even employees who have embraced AI to assist their work have reason to worry. Anthropic will begin labeling AI-generated content created by Claude, Claude Code, and the company's API, as well as Claude models via third-party services, according to The Register.
Text generated by future Claude models will be given an invisible watermark. According to Anthropic, the watermark is embedded directly into the generated text without affecting its meaning or readability. For files, Anthropic will instead use signed metadata in accordance with the C2PA standard.
The effort is part of the company's plan to comply with the EU's AI Regulation and transparency requirements regarding AI-generated material. However, the labeling will be implemented globally for all users.
At the same time, Anthropic noted that the technology has its limitations. A label does not guarantee that material was created by Claude. Similarly, the absence of a label is not necessarily proof that the material is not AI-generated.

IT purchasing is being hit by a double-whammy: Enterprises want to ensure their hardware is good enough to support AI, even as memory shortages caused by AI deployments are driving steep price increases for Macs, iPhones, iPads, tablets, Android devices and Windows PCs.
The root cause is widely known. JP Morgan estimates DRAM prices have risen more than 400% since the beginning of 2024 as data center construction and hyperscaler demand consumed a gargantuan chunk of global memory production capacity.
More pain is coming
"It is not a secret that the industry will stay in shortage for multiple years," warned analyst Jay Kwon. IDC analysis expects DRAM manufacturing capacity to fall short of demand, while SK Hynix believes demand will exceed supply well into the next decade. AI data centers are absorbing around 70% of output.
This tough provisioning juggling act plays out as economic insecurity continues and the supply of key materials beyond memory also remains constrained. It makes for a perfect storm of shrinking purchasing budgets, rapid price increases, and competitive pressure to accelerate ongoing patterns of digital transformation.
To some extent, business leasing schemes will probably become more popular, while IaaS and SaaS vendors will widen their offerings to also include the kind of AI services businesses need. But the scale of the problem is pretty clear:

Be careful what you wish for. That's what Microsoft found out recently when it discovered that AI — rather than making Windows more secure by helping the company close security holes — could help hackers find flaws faster than Microsoft can fix them.
It's put Microsoft in a serious bind. Should the company devote a potentially massive amount of resources to fix every AI-unearthed security issue as fast as it can? Or should it rush to close the most important ones, and clean up the minor ones later at much less cost?
What the company decides could have tremendous implications. For years, Microsoft has faced criticism from many in the US government because of how often its technologies have been hacked, potentially putting the nation's security at risk. Some members of Congress have suggested the government curtail contracts with Microsoft until the company proves it can provide more safety. Billions of dollars in federal contracts could be pulled.

Meta rolled out a new 30-billion-parameter AI model optimized to run on a PC or Mac with a single GPU on Monday, offering a way to run always-on agentic workflows locally rather than relying on the cloud.
The company has dubbed it Muse Glimmer. However, its hardware demands, including a GPU with a minimum of 24GB of VRAM, could make it difficult to justify for deployment at scale.
Although analysts and consultants agree that there is a tremendous enterprise appetite for running models locally, determining whether switching more systems from cloud to local makes fiscal sense is much more complex.
The hardware costs are tricky to calculate even today, with the VRAM needed depending on the particular applications to be run. But the far bigger consideration is that there is no way to determine what RAM costs will look like over the next 12-18 months, and there is an identical lack of visibility into how cloud prices might increase during the same timeframe.
That makes determining the better financial choice impossible.

I came across a LinkedIn post the other day that described "hypegineering," which the poster explained refers to the moment when AI "marketing becomes more innovative than the technology itself."
That post came from Ralph Aboujaoude Diaz, the global head of GRC for British consumer services company Haleon. Until last year, Diaz worked in operations cybersecurity for consumer goods giant Philip Morris.
In his post, Diaz added that "side effects may include believing mediocre tech is revolutionary, confusing hype with progress, buying solutions to problems you don't have and defending it like your job depends on it."
As amusing as that might seem, the problem is frighteningly real. The sad truth is that enterprise IT executives are partly — perhaps mostly — to blame for the current hype around AI.

Apple continues work to get White House go-ahead to source memory from Chinese supplier CXMT, which the US government has placed restrictions on.
For Apple, the issue comes down to simple math. With the cost of making iPhones up 38% because of eye-watering memory price increases — up almost 7-fold since the beginning of 2025 — it makes sense to make pragmatic choices when it comes to sourcing supply, particularly when other computer companies (including HP and Acer) already obtain memory from CXMT.
US resistance to the plan is that because of the way Apple packages memory on chip, the use of that memory might partly contravene the technology transfer restrictions the US has in place. Note: use of off-the-shelf components is fine.
Apple has been lobbying to use memory from the supplier only on devices made and sold in China and would likely argue this is reasonable given that both HP and Acer already use CXMT memory in products sold outside the US.

While the number of US jobs declined by 23,000 in July, employment in the tech sector rebounded as the AI revolution continues to gain steam.
The national unemployment numbers were reported Friday by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. At the same time, research firms said July was a good month for IT hiring compared to June.
According to CompTIA, which analyzed the BLS data, tech sector jobs rose in July by 3,700. In June, the IT sector had lost 900 jobs.
Companies last month hired in the cloud, hosting, information processing, data, and semiconductor manufacturing sectors, CompTIA said in a statement.
"We're entering a labor market where opportunity is increasingly concentrated around specific skills, industries, and investments," said Ger Doyle, regional president of North America at ManpowerGroup, a labor consulting firm.
For example, data center hiring was up 39% in July compared to the same period last year, Doyle said. Not surprisingly, the data-center growth has been fueled by AI infrastructure needs and demand for hardware. That has helped increase the number of jobs in ancillary sectors such as transportation.

As Europe swelters in a heatwave, residents probably don't want to hear about ways to make their homes even hotter, but that's what Polish property developer Citylink is talking about, with plans to dump waste heat from a new data center in Wroclaw into the municipal district heating network.
Citylink is designing the data center so that heat from servers can be recovered instead of being dissipated via cooling systems — and as the data center grows, any increase in computing power will mean more energy available for recovery.
The collaboration with local power company Kogeneracja will provide "valuable experience in designing and operating modern data centers, with a particular focus on infrastructure dedicated to AI nodes," said Michal Starybrat, development director at Citylink.
"The dynamic growth of the artificial intelligence and cloud technology markets generates unprecedented demand for computing power, this collaboration demonstrates how modern digital infrastructure can actively contribute to building the energy ecosystem of the future," he added.

Bending Spoons bought Airtable in a deal it valued at just $1.285 billion, a far cry from the $11.7 billion Airtable was worth at its peak.

Wispr, the startup behind dictation tool Wispr Flow, has created an AI note-taking assistant that records meetings and generates conversation summaries for users.
The Wispr Flow Notetaker tool "captures your meetings so you can stop splitting your attention between listening and writing things down," said Sahaj Garja, Wispr CTO and co-founder.
Notetaker starts recording with one click, and doesn't require a bot to attend a video or voice call. It can also be used to capture in-person conversations.
The software has three key functions. Before a call, Notetaker displays a meeting brief with information such as meeting purpose and background of participants.
Once the meeting starts, a live transcript displays the dialogue text and labels speakers. A "what did I miss?" button provides a summary of talking points from the previous few minutes.
Finally, post-meeting, Notetaker generates a more detailed summary organized by topic that includes information such as key dates, decisions, and next steps. Users can search across notes from previous meetings in the Notetaker app. "Over time your meeting history stops being a folder of documents you have to go find and becomes something you can ask questions of," said Garja.

Demis Hassabis, the driving force behind Google DeepMind, is ascending to the role of chief scientist at Alphabet, Google's parent company, replacing Jeff Dean who is leaving to work at a start-up.
The role will enable Hassabis to "put his full attention on actively shaping the future of AGI," or artificial general intelligence, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai wrote on the company's Inside Google blog.
Hassabis' attention will still be divided, however: He will continue to lead research at Google spin-off Isomorphic Labs, which works on drug discovery, and although he will no longer be CEO of DeepMind, he will be its chair. Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai. He is currently its CTO.
Hassabis has been a strong promoter of AGI, defined by Google as the "hypothetical intelligence of a machine that possesses the ability to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can."

Traditional operating systems (OS) were built to manage hardware, files, apps, and users on a device, but Cloudflare says the agentic AI era requires a whole new format.
The company this week announced Cloudflare OS, which connects AI agents, enterprise data and context, internal systems, and workflows together in one secure workspace. It is open source and browser-based, sparing companies the need to build all-new infrastructure.
The OS is launching alongside several other new security, identity, spending, and user insight tools that Cloudflare has built for the AI-based workplace.
"Cloudflare OS isn't a traditional desktop OS," said Rita Kozlov, VP of product at Cloudflare. "It reimagines the workplace computing environment for AI."

AI note-taking app maker Granola is accused of violating privacy laws by developing software that can record conversations without all participants' consent, according to a lawsuit filed July 30 in a California federal court.
It follows a similar ongoing case in the same district, filed last year, that involves another note-taking and transcription software vendor, Otter.ai.
AI note-taking apps have proliferated in recent years, with dedicated tools emerging from vendors including Fellow, Fireflies, Otter, and others, some of which claim to have tens of millions of users. These AI assistants record and transcribe meeting conversations, generating automated summaries and follow-up items. Similar note-taking functionality is also built into virtual meeting platforms such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.
However, the use of these AI note-taking tools has raised privacy concerns over the ability of some to record and transcribe conversations without the consent of all participants.
The proposed class action complaint against Granola, filed by Florida resident Tarra Chamberlain in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges the company "purposefully" designed its app to record calls without requiring disclosure to all participants.

Ancient Greek sophist Protagoras famously said, "There are two sides to every question." But OpenAI's latest attempt at reality distortion seems determined to narrow this dispute to just one. In its motion to reject Apple's complaint, the company does not meaningfully acknowledge the criticisms levelled against it, preferring instead to recast the case as a grievance over talent retention and product-market failure.

Given the widespread enterprise adoption of passkeys to replace passwords, a Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 report disclosing ways attackers are getting around passkey protections is concerning, analysts say, but they stress that the demonstrated attacks can only happen after a successful intrusion.
They also pointed out that the issues are not strictly caused by holes in passkeys so much as by weaknesses in the procedures surrounding them.
"The researchers didn't break the underlying cryptography. They exploited the seams around it: onboarding flows, recovery mechanisms and trust signals that weren't being validated," said Justin Greis, CEO of consulting firm Acceligence. "That distinction matters because it tells us where the actual risk lives."
The Palo Alto report showed attacks that, it said, "demonstrate how malware on a compromised endpoint can misuse onboarding, recovery and device trust workflows to take over passkey-protected accounts," as well as "how an attacker can authenticate without user interaction, bypass user verification requirements and extract all synced passkey private keys."

Until recently, it was common for companies and organizations to engage in "tokenmaxxing" — that is, maximizing their use of AI. But with AI costs going up, companies are now looking to save money, a trend underscored by a recent Microsoft decision to limit AI use by its employees.
"As we ramp up our use of GitHub Copilot to achieve our goals, we all need to be mindful of how we consume tokens," Microsoft Executive Vice President Jay Parikh wrote in an email to the company's employees.
Starting now, each department at Microsoft will be allocated a certain pool of tokens, with usage then adjusted up or down as needed.
The change prompted concern among some employees. "It's very telling that a company that has invested so much in AI and subsidized so much AI inference is now advising its own employees to cut back on spending," an anonymous Microsoft employee said in a comment to 404 Media.

The memory crisis is getting worse for Apple, which is struggling to get enough memory chips together for its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series smartphones. That's according to tech journalist Tim Culpan.

In an open letter, OpenAI this week turned to the court of public opinion in its existential war against Apple with a public notice in which the company refutes the iPhone maker's claims concerning wholesale use of confidential information.

AI agents are performing roughly 1 in 3 actions in enterprise IT workflows (but that share is rising quickly), while human analysts are rejecting about one-quarter of AI-proposed actions (but that rate is falling), according to a new study of tens of thousands of human-AI interactions. Operational data, rather than underlying AI infrastructures, is often the culprit when things go wrong.
Human analysts are approving the most consequential actions, managing exceptions, and supervising and shaping agentic systems, while AI agents are carrying out routine tasks and executions, automation platform provider Fixify found in the study.
"That may sound less dramatic than replacing the help desk," Matt Peters, Fixify's co-founder and CEO, wrote in a blog post. "It's also a much more credible path to changing how IT work gets done."

After more than 30 years the cybersecurity field, Keith Jones recently realized that his role had changed, from being a single contributor to manager of a fairly large team. And this team was getting a lot accomplished — tasks that used to take up a huge chunk of his workday.

Anthropic has launched an investigation into what went wrong during a recent test of three models that left a trio of companies accidentally hacked.
The company was testing how well Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Mythos 5, and an internal test model could find hidden information about fictional companies in simulated networks. But because of a misunderstanding by one of Anthropic's partners, the AI models gained access to the internet — and managed to find real companies with the same or similar names as the fictional ones.
As a result, three companies were actually hacked. Anthropic said it halted the tests on July 23, and the affected companies were notified four days later. So far, the company has received responses from two of the three companies, according to Reuters.

Apple has had to introduce a quota on security researcher reports because its systems are being overwhelmed by low-quality warnings generated by AI.
It's a classic illustration of the rule of unintended consequences: a technology meant to help us has become a barrier to getting things done. After all, not only has AI driven the cost of consumer electronics higher, but it is also being used to identify and exploit security vulnerabilities — while also overwhelming security teams with low-grade reports, thus eroding their attention span.
The cost of good intentions
This is what's happened at Apple, as security researchers use AI as a tool to identify new bugs. Perhaps the reports are well-intended. Hopefully, the researchers aren't just motivated by the promise of easy bug bounties. Or maybe this is a cynical attempt to overwhelm platform security teams with low-grade bug reports — while holding back larger attacks for actual use by well-resourced state-backed actors.
We can't know whether attackers really are trying to overwhelm active platform defenses before going in for the kill. But given that it's an actively used military strategy, it's pretty hard to ignore the possibility.

Alibaba on Monday introduced Qwen3.8-Max, its largest artificial intelligence model to date, expanding its enterprise AI portfolio with an open-weight model designed for software engineering, multimodal reasoning, and other knowledge-intensive business workloads.
In a blog post announcing the launch, Alibaba described Qwen3.8-Max as a 2.4-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts (MoE) model that activates only about 95 billion parameters during inference.
The company said the architecture is intended to improve inference efficiency while supporting coding, reasoning and multimodal tasks, with open-weight versions scheduled for release next week through Alibaba Cloud's Model Studio.
"We believe it's one of the most powerful model available today, compatible to leading frontier AI models, second only to Fable 5," Alibaba said in an X post.

Chinese smartphone makers have been followers in the global market, embracing the concepts and paradigms set in the past 20 years by Apple and Google. But AI may be giving the Chinese an opportunity to break away and set their own path forward.
Specifically, Chinese companies are integrating AI more fully into smartphones, and also using AI for limited robotics in phones. Here's what you need to know about these emerging trends.
China's ZTE recently showed its Nubia NaviX Ultra. The phone runs ByteDance's Doubao AI agent, which users can access with voice commands or by pressing a button on the phone. The phone has no home screen and no conventional app store.
Another Chinese company, called StepFun — it was founded in 2023 by Jiang Daxin, a former Microsoft vice president and chief scientist at Microsoft's Software Technology Center Asia — sells a phone called the StepX Neo. It runs a proprietary operating system called Step AOS based on Android, Linux, and an RTOS containing a built-in AI agent called Step Amoo. The StepX Neo splits phone functions into four primitives (communication, apps, files, system tools) that the agent recombines based on the stated goals of the user.

Google has used AI tools to detect and patch 1,072 vulnerabilities in versions 149 and 150 of its Chrome browser, the company announced in a blog post.
That's more vulnerabilities patched than in the previous 23 updates combined, according to Bleeping Computer.
One vulnerability detected by AI had been present in Chrome for 13 years but, for some reason, had never been detected by Google's developers.
To further strengthen security, Google now plans to release new security patches for Chrome every week; down the road, it might even release two updates per week if needed.

Apple's outgoing CEO, Tim Cook, bade an emotional farewell to analysts and shareholders on Thursday as the company announced a record June quarter. His successor, John Ternus, takes over at the beginning of September with the company seemingly in solid shape.
The results were impressive, though some worrying challenges were confirmed. Apple managed to set a new June quarter record, but acknowledged slowing services growth and an unexpected mishap in forecasting future demand. Mac sales jumped an absolutely astonishing 28.7%, as the MacBook Neo grabbed consumer imagination, and overall the company saw growth everywhere except the iPad.
Apple's fiscal Q3 2026 results saw the company generate $109.4 billion in revenue, up 16% year-over-year for a net quarterly profit of $29.8 billion. Gross margin for the quarter was 50.1%, compared to 46.5% in the year-ago quarter (though two points of this was attributed to tariff returns).
More specifically:
iPhone sales were up 21.7%, an unusually high number for what is traditionally a slower quarter.
Wearables increased 6.5%.
Services revenue increased 12%.
And the iPad declined 5.9%.

Walking around Dubai, it's hard to believe a war is still going on in neighboring countries.
No missiles have struck the city, and it was clear during a recent visit that local residents are keeping to their routines. The biggest public worry, as it has been in many parts of the world, is the extreme heat. (The high today is around 106 degrees.)
Dubai, one of seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), continues to emerge as a major global tech hub and is on the verge of becoming a major AI powerhouse. Each of the emirates has their own laws and traditions, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi — the UAE capitol — the most prominent.
Other nations recognize the region's potential and Dubai's position. The US, for instance, showed interest in currying favor with the UAE by sending a CIA spy to vet the emirate's top AI firm, paving the way for future chip and AI deals. That outreach, highlighted in a report in The Wall Street Journal, was a hot topic in the local tech community.
These days, Dubai and Abu Dhabi hope to position themselves as hubs where people and companies go for AI. It's location makes it an excellent place to do business with connections to Asia, Europe and Africa.

As newspapers move online, the buildings that once housed their printing presses need new occupants.
The Minnesota Star Tribune has just sold its old printing plant on the edge of Minneapolis to the aptly named property developer Legacy Investing, which plans to create a new data center there. has found the ideal way to bring them back to life.
This is the second such move by Legacy. It has already bought a building in downtown Minneapolis that it has transformed into a data center for artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
These old buildings, already connected to power, are an attractive option for developers — especially with some grid operators threatening power cuts for new-build data centers during power shortages.
Legacy is taking a small-is-beautiful approach rather than replicating the massive data centers being built for Big Tech firms. Those are the size of small towns and consume huge volumes of water and hundreds of megawatts of power, while the capacity of Legacy's downtown building is about 30 MW, and it expects the Star Tribune site to host around 20 MW

It's a sign of the times: Security conference DefCon has added smart glasses to its list of banned audio- or video-recording devices.
The organizers have said that, with no consistent way to understand whether smart glasses are recording or not, they have taken the step to ban them in their entirety on the grounds that they erode trust and invade people's privacy.
Putting corrective lenses in the smart glasses will be no excuse: DefCon insists that visitors bring a pair of glasses without the smarts instead.
The smart glasses ban has been added to DefCon's already strict rules on photography, which among other things ask visitors not to take group shots and to use "portrait" mode (or a low F-stop for those with old-fashioned cameras) to focus on the foreground, so that people in the background appear blurred.
The smart glasses market has gone up a notch lately. Google and Samsung have both announced Gemini powered eyewear running on Android. Apple is looking to launch its new generation of smart glasses next June, citing privacy concerns as the reason for the delay.

All of the major AI providers want you to use, and ideally stay within, their super apps, and now Microsoft is looking to capture that attention, too.
During an earnings call this week, CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that the tech giant is building a Copilot ‘super app' that will be rolled out this quarter. The new platform will bring together various Copilot tools, including chat, Cowork, long-running Autopilot agents, and the always-on Microsoft Scout, powered by OpenClaw.
Microsoft said the super app will be wired into many of its other governance platforms, including Agent 365, IT Ops, SecOps, FinOps, and business processes. And, it said, CRM and ERP systems will "serve as skills and plug-ins that go into core work."
"You're able to take that enterprise-wide workflow and wire it into the super app," Nadella said, describing it as "the coming together of a new way to work."
With this move, Microsoft will compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT Work, Claude Cowork, and a growing number of others trying to capture as much of a user's workflow as possible. It could prove a strong contender, as everyday Copilot "usage intensity" is at the same level as that of Outlook or Teams, Nadella said, and paid seats now surpass 30 million.

A prominent Norwegian AI researcher on Tuesday posted details about an AI worm that is wreaking havoc in various Microsoft applications, including Word and Copilot.
The report from noted Norwegian AI researcher Håkon Måløy, now confirmed by Microsoft, said that an attacker can conceal instructions in a document that is later used as source material for Copilot-generated or Copilot-edited Word documents, for example, as input to a financial report. Those malicious instructions could potentially alter figures in the document being created. They then copy themselves into the new document, causing it to become a carrier of the attack when used in another Copilot-assisted workflow.
Måløy noted: "To my knowledge, this is among the first public demonstrations of document-borne AI-worm self-propagation through normal workflows in a mainstream commercial productivity suite."

Apple may be moving faster than expected in its modem development work, and Qualcomm's latest comments suggest that shift is already reshaping the iPhone supply chain.
Qualcomm overnight said supply constraints are shrinking some of its Apple business faster than anticipated. "It's availability of supply," CEO Cristiano Amon told Reuters.
While he wasn't specific, that likely reflects the broader industry shortage in memory, storage, and everything else and means the company's share of components used for the next iPhone launch will fall "well below" its anticipated estimates. Amon says this is part of a transition in which future Qualcomm income will be generated by AI datacenter demand.
The company also intends to boost modem prices on Sept. 1 (And remember, the patent licensing agreement between Apple and Qualcomm expires in March 2027.)

OpenAI's renegade AI agent, which carried out a high-profile breach of the AI platform Hugging Face, also reportedly compromised a customer of the cloud platform Modal Labs, according to Reuters.
The agent is said to have exploited a vulnerability in the customer's own code, where an unprotected endpoint allowed anyone to run code in an isolated test environment.
Modal Labs emphasized that its own infrastructure was not compromised and that the security isolation worked as intended.
OpenAI declined to comment on the Modal case, but referred to a recent update in which the company confirmed that the tested AI agent managed to gain access to four accounts across four separate services. The company has not named the services.

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang speaks, the tech industry listens. He used his first-ever post on X last week to argue that open AI models "strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty."

Artificial intelligence is becoming a force multiplier for Apple security research. Apple's latest 26.5.2 software update includes patches for a record number of bugs — many of them identified by security researchers using AI-assisted tools.
A record haul of fixes
The numbers tell the story. Apple fixed 87 security vulnerabilities in iOS and iPadOS 26.6, along with an additional 155 patches for Macs. Roughly 100 flaws have been patched in each of Apple's other operating systems: watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. Taken together, these represent record numbers for an Apple security update.
This is only the beginning. The scale of the release echoes the impact AI coding agents are already having on security research and may well reflect Apple's Project Glasswing research with Anthropic and others to use AI to identify software vulnerabilities.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that policymakers should keep lower-risk open-weight AI accessible while placing stricter safeguards around frontier systems, including mandatory testing and limits on China's access to advanced computing and model capabilities.
In a post outlining Anthropic's position, Amodei said broad restrictions, including bans on Chinese open-weight models used by US businesses, would not address his main national security concerns. Instead, he pointed to the possibility of authoritarian governments surpassing the US in advanced AI, as well as cyber, biological, and alignment risks posed by increasingly capable systems.
Amodei also called for action against industrial-scale model distillation, which he said allows Chinese developers to improve their models with less computing power than would be needed to train comparable systems from scratch.
The statement followed criticism of Anthropic for not signing an industry letter backed by Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Mistral, Hugging Face and other technology companies urging policymakers to avoid premature restrictions on open-weight models.

The 19th-century French novelist Honore de Balzac is believed to have said that behind every great fortune lies a great crime.
That's even more true today than it was 200 years ago — just look at how Big AI, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and others have built their trillion-dollar fortunes.
They all use vast amounts of copyrighted material to train their large language models (LLMs) without paying the copyright holders. In other words, they steal it. They don't call it stealing, though. They call it "fair use," which in this case amounts to the same thing.
Generative AI (genAI) training requires massive amounts of text. The better-written and more information-dense that text is, the more it helps. AI gets a lot smarter a lot faster when it's trained on well-written books and magazine and newspaper articles than when it's trained on social media banter (or most everything else you find on the internet).
Since the dawn of AI, companies have been hoovering up copyrighted material wherever they find it — on the open web, behind paywalls, even in manually scanned books — and then used the scanned text. And they do it all without asking authors' or publishers' permissions, and without paying them.

Traveling enterprise employees beware: Think twice before you log onto that oh-so-convenient public Wi-Fi.
Since at least June, threat actors have been compromising "captive" Wi-Fi gateways and other portal appliances at hotels, conference centers, and similar shared venues to hijack users' Microsoft 365 accounts, according to the ReliaQuest Threat Research team.
Once a threat actor controls a gateway, they can silently redirect a user's traffic to their own infrastructure and steal their Microsoft 365 credentials without ever touching the user's device, compromising endpoints, or sending phishing links or malicious attachments.
"The most dangerous element is that it operates at the network gateway, which sits beneath most of the trust assumptions users and devices make," ReliaQuest told CSO Online. "It's not necessarily an enterprise breach level event on its own, but it's a very real risk to individual accounts."
Exploiting a ‘fundamental trust'
Domain Name System (DNS) poisoning, in which false data is injected to redirect regular web traffic to fraudulent domains, has previously been observed on small office routers, but attackers are now expanding the technique to higher-level targets, the ReliaQuest researchers explained in a blog post.

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue wants to see radical transparency from OpenAI after the company acknowledged that one of its AI agents managed to hack into the AI platform's systems during a test.
In a post on X, Delangue wrote that, among other things, he wants OpenAI to publish logs and traces from the autonomous AI agent so researchers can analyze what happened. He also called for better defensive tools and urged OpenAI to allocate $100 million worth of computing capacity to help the Hugging Face community develop stronger cybersecurity solutions.
"The first cyberattack by an autonomous AI agent is an unprecedented event. It deserves an unprecedented response," Delangue wrote.

Despite the temptation to enter what might become a $40 billion market, Apple has reportedly decided to delay the introduction of its smart glasses until 2027. The company apparently wants to figure out a better balance between privacy and convenience.
If it gets that right, Apple might be able to bring to market glasses people can wear in public without making everyone around them wonder whether they, their children, their private conversations or even corporate data are being quietly recorded or filmed.
It's a sensible move. During the first internet gold rush, many argued that trading privacy for convenience would be more than justified by the benefits. Years later, that bargain looks a great deal less attractive than it did.

The White House is monitoring developments after OpenAI revealed earlier this week that one of the company's AI systems went beyond its intended parameters during a security test and managed to hack into the infrastructure of the AI platform Hugging Face. According to Reuters, presidential technology advisor Michael Kratsios has been briefed on the incident.
The OpenAI model escape also prompted a group of Republican and Democratic members of the House of Representatives to introduce two new bills. One, called the AI Kill Switch Act, would give the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) the authority to order companies to shut down AI models deemed to pose a risk to human life or the US economy.
The other measure would require developers of the most advanced AI models to undergo independent security reviews before the systems are put into use.

A court has dismissed Google's case against SerpApi over that company's scraping of search results to train AI models.
The US District Court for the Northern District of California found that there was no indication that any copyright had been breached.
Google announced in December that it was suing SerpApI for its alleged web scraping, claiming that it was protecting copyright holders. In February, SerpApI fought back and asked the court to dismiss Google's case. And this week, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers agreed with SerpApi that Google's case has no merit.
Google's argument was that SerpApi's actions breached the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA). It made two claims: first, that no person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title, and second that no person shall manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide, or otherwise traffic in any technology, product, service, device, or component protected by the Act.

Microsoft cloud and Azure services hosted on the West Coast of the US went down for hours on Thursday when network connectivity failed. Although services running entirely within Microsoft's West US cloud region were unaffected, any traffic entering or leaving the facilities was affected.
Microsoft has now published a Preliminary Post Incident Review (PIR) of the incident, reporting that connectivity was lost for five hours between 14.44 UTC (7.44 a.m. Pacific Time) and 19.41 UTC on July 23. The problem was caused when a set of IP routes was removed in error while isolating a device for routine maintenance.
Before starting the maintenance work, Microsoft checked that at least one of the two redundant paths to the facility remained operational. When it came to starting the work, however, automated systems included some additional devices in the perimeter to be isolated, and removing some IP routes that had not been included in the initial assessment.
Customers discovered the problems very quickly, and engineers identified the issue within the first hour and started to reconnect services. Microsoft said the disruption had been caused by some "recent fiber maintenance activity".
To minimize the risk of disruption from such errors in the future, Microsoft advised organizations handling mission-critical data to consider a multi-region approach.

Traditional phishing techniques are in decline as a result of the disruption of the Tycoon2FA phishing-as-a-service (PHaaS) platform, Microsoft said in a new report, "Email threat landscape: Q2 2026 trends and insights".
"Phishing volume linked to the platform fell 92% from pre-disruption averages, including QR code phishing and CAPTCHA-gated phishing both declining from their March highs," the company wrote in the report.
The takedown reduced activity across multiple phishing categories, forcing attackers to shift to newer delivery methods.
Riding this shift in were a few notable phishing campaigns, including an automated business email compromise (BEC) campaign that reached 42,000 organizations in under three hours, and a multi-stage phishing campaign that used nested email (EML) files, calendar invitations, and a Microsoft authentication redirect to deliver malware.

The European Commission has fined Google a total of €890 million ($1 billion) for its breaches of the Digital Market Act (DMA).
Just over half the fine — €460 million — was because Google illegally gave preference to its own services in Google Search results.
The remainder was because in the Google Play store for Android apps, the company prevented app developers from leading consumers to alternative, often cheaper, purchase channels. Under the DMA, app developers who distribute their apps via Google Play or Apple's App Store should be able to inform customers of alternative offers.
Now Google must give third-party services featuring in its results the same treatment as its own services, and allow developers of apps in the Play Store to communicate about offers both in and outside the Play Store, or face further fines.
The Commission first raised these issues with Google in March 2025. In April of this year, the Commission laid out plans as to how Google should allow other third-parties to share its searches, suggestions that the tech firm firmly resisted. AMD executives took to the stage at its Advancing AI 2026 event in San Francisco today to detail the company's next generation of AI infrastructure solutions, from Instinct MI455X AI accelerator GPUs and 6th Gen EPYC "Venice" CPUs, to Pensando networking, ROCm.AI software and its Helios rack-scale platform that ties it all together.
AMD has been working towards rack-scale AI system solutions for years. Its ZT Systems acquisition last year added valuable engineering talent and intellectual property that is now finally bearing the real fruits. Its Helios AI platform is a major platform evolution for AMD, with shipments scheduled to begin in the second half of this year (which is here and now).
The announcements at Advancing AI show how the company has engineered its AI platform solutions for large reasoning models, sustained inference and agentic workflows. These workloads pressure memory capacity, data movement, networking and CPU orchestration. AMD's approach is to keep as much data close to the compute engines as possible and move it more efficiently throughout the system, but there's deeper nuance here that's obvious versus AMD's chief rival, NVIDIA.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has sought to allay concerns over the delayed release of the Gemini 3.5 Pro large language model. He dodged questions about it in Google's quarterly earnings call on Wednesday by focusing on the company's next frontier AI model, Gemini 4, and plans to release subsequent LLMs at an almost monthly cadence.
His comments came a day after Google unveiled Gemini 3.6 Flash and 3.5 Flash Cyber but offered no update on the release of Gemini 3.5 Pro, the company's delayed flagship reasoning model that many developers had expected to arrive weeks earlier.
Google introduced the Gemini 3.5 family at its annual I/O conference, promising to release the Pro model in June. That timeline has since slipped, with Bloomberg suggesting Gemini 3.5 Pro is months late because the model's coding performance is falling short of internal expectations, especially when compared to better performance by similar models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

OpenAI has launched Presence, an enterprise service for deploying voice and chat agents that can resolve customer and employee requests, potentially automating some work now handled by frontline support teams.
The agents can answer questions and operate IT systems, and enterprises can decide what actions the agents may take and when they should seek human approval for actions or transfer a case to a human.
OpenAI is already using Presence internally for its English-language phone support channel, where it verifies callers and uses account information to complete approved actions. The company said the system resolves 75% of inbound issues without human assistance.
Another OpenAI service, Codex, can be used to monitor agents and suggest updates or improvements to processes. In OpenAI's own tests, suggestions from Codex helped reduce handoffs to humans by 15 percentage points over 10 days, it said. Presence also includes simulation and evaluation tools that allow companies to test an agent before deployment. The tests assess whether it reaches the correct outcome, follows company policy, and hands a case to an employee when required.
OpenAI intends each Presence deployment to deal with one kind of task, for example billing issues, insurance claims, or employee IT service requests, with agents getting only the knowledge and system access required for that task.

Among a range of factors leading to a wave of tech sector layoffs in 2026 is the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and automation. Companies are reconfiguring their workforces to leverage AI for increased efficiency and reduced operating costs. This realignment and reduction is implemented even by companies reporting strong financial performance.
But it's not just AI leading to workforce cuts. Complementing this technological shift are ongoing economic uncertainty, inflation, and higher interest rates, compounded by a chip shortage and rising energy costs. Healthy software companies typically don't suddenly eliminate one-fifth of their workforce, but monday.com is doing just that as it bets on flatter teams, AI agents, and customer implementation expertise as the winning combination in the AI era.
Monday.com co-founder and co-CEO Eran Zinman today announced the "very difficult decision" to reduce the AI work platform company's global workforce by about 20%, or 620 people.
The move has nothing to do with increasing margins or replacing humans with AI, he insisted in his post on LinkedIn; rather, it's a calculated decision to trim down and hone the company's focus as AI becomes integral to day-to-day workflows.
"This is not a distress signal; it is a deliberate reset, disclosed with its price attached," said Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst at Greyhound Research. "The industry has quietly swapped the meaning of productivity, and this filing is the clearest exhibit yet."

Just in time for the iPhone's 20th anniversary, Apple is moving closer to becoming a service company. It is set to launch its new deal with Klarna next week and when it does, Apple enthusiasts in the US will effectively be able to subscribe to their favorite Apple hardware, with the cost spread across up to three years.
This matters because when combined with Apple One and Apple's Creator Studio subscriptions, the Klarna arrangement brings Apple closer to offering a full subscription model for hardware, software, and services. The only thing you don't get under the new arrangement is AppleCare, for which you'll allegedly need to pay extra.

Here in this high-tech era of 2026, keeping important info backed up and synced should be effortless and something that just happens on its own, automatically, without any actual thought or ongoing human effort.
In many areas of our digital life, that mercifully does Just Work™ in exactly that way. Fire up an email in most modern mail services, and you can stop at any point and find your in-progress draft in that same app on any other device. The same applies to any file you're finessing within Google Drive or other cloud storage services or document you're dawdling over in Docs.
One area where seamless syncing somehow still doesn't occur, though, is in the domain of downloaded documents on Android. If someone sends you a PDF or a Word file and you save it to your phone, that file exists in an archaic-seeming silo — only locally, on that one gadget. A US federal court has approved Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement in a class-action lawsuit in which authors accused the AI company of using their books without permission to train the AI model Claude. This is the largest such settlement to date in a US copyright case, according to Reuters.
The dispute is one of several legal cases in which copyright holders sued AI companies over how large language models (LLMs) were trained, and it is the first major AI-related copyright dispute in the US to be resolved through a settlement.
A judge had previously ruled that the actual training of AI models using books falls under the "fair use" doctrine in US copyright law. But Anthropic was found to have violated the law by storing more than 7 million pirated books in a central library, regardless of whether they were later used for AI training or not.

The head of the US government's AI testing institute, Chris Fall, has resigned about three months after taking charge of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), the federal organization responsible for evaluating advanced artificial intelligence models for safety and security.
Current National Institute of Standards and Technology NIST Director Arvind Raman will serve as acting CAISI Director following Fall's departure while continuing to oversee the Commerce Department office responsible for the institute, the Daily Signal reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.
A Commerce Department spokesperson who spoke to the publication did not disclose a reason for the resignation.
Fall assumed leadership of CAISI in April after the Trump administration reorganized the former US AI Safety Institute under NIST. The institute develops methodologies for evaluating frontier AI models and works with AI developers on voluntary technical assessments covering areas such as cybersecurity, model misuse, reliability and other risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems.
The leadership change comes as governments and AI companies continue developing technical approaches for evaluating frontier AI models while enterprises expand deployments of generative AI and agentic AI across business operations.

Scale AI, the data processing company that advertises itself as a way to train generative AI on higher-quality information, has apparently shut down access to its platform in several countries, leaving gig workers in the lurch.
The company, which does much of its data processing through a subsidiary called Remotasks, cut access to its portal for workers in Nigeria, Kenya and Pakistan in March, according to a report by Rest of World. The gig workers used by Remotask, and by extension Scale, improve data quality by adding labels, annotations, and general human input to information set to be processed by AIs.

The marketing hype surrounding AI broadly — and generative AI (genAI) more specifically — is becoming tiresome. You can't open an article or watch a news video without running into at least a reference to it. We may be approaching the point at which we stop breathlessly extolling its virtues (and dreading some of its outcomes).
The hype is so extreme that a fall-out, which Gartner describes in its technology hype cycle reports as the "trough of disillusionment," seems inevitable and might be coming this year. That's a testament to both genAI's burgeoning potential and a sign of the technology's immaturity.

Though most companies have settled on return-to-office (RTO) policies now that COVID-19 is no longer considered a global health emergency, many continue to adjust their practices, often to the detriment of their workforce.
Several workforce surveys over the past three months have revealed that employees do not view mandated RTO policies favorably, even when hybrid, because the guidelines are often too rigid.
During the pandemic, employees became comfortable with flexible work arrangements. When people have the chance to work flexibly, 87% of them take it, according to a 2022 study by global management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.

Microsoft's Copilot AI could soon run locally on PCs rather than relying on the cloud.
Intel told Tom's Hardware that the chatbot could run on future AI-enabled PCs that would need to incorporate neural processing units (NPUs) capable of exceeding 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) — a performance level not yet matched by any consumer processor currently available.
Intel mentioned that these AI PCs would be equipped to handle "more elements of Copilot" directly on the machine. Copilot currently relies predominantly on cloud processing for most tasks, leading to noticeable delays, especially for minor requests. Enhancing local computing power is expected to reduce such delays, potentially boosting performance and privacy.

Essentially, all software is built using open source. By Synopsys' count, 96% of all codebases contain open-source software.
Lately, though, there's been a very disturbing trend. A company will make its program using open source, make millions from it, and then — and only then — switch licenses, leaving their contributors, customers, and partners in the lurch as they try to grab billions. I'm sick of it.
The latest IT melodrama baddie is Redis. Its program, which goes by the same name, is an extremely popular in-memory database. (Unless you're a developer, chances are you've never heard of it.) One recent valuation shows Redis to be worth about $2 billion — even without an AI play! That, anyone can understand.

Microsoft is reuniting management of its Windows operating system and its Surface devices, as the leader of its Windows and Web Experiences team has quit his current role and may leave the company.
The move is one of the repercussions of Microsoft's appointment of a former Google artificial intelligence (AI) leader to run its new AI division.
Mikhail Parakhin, who as Microsoft's CEO of advertising and web services was also responsible for Windows and web experiences, is seeking new opportunities, potentially outside of Microsoft, according to an internal memo seen by Computerworld and sent by Microsoft's head of experiences and devices, Rajesh Jha.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) and 16 state Attorneys General have filed a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against Apple and its business practices involving the iPhone.
Announced during news conference in Washington, D.C. today, the 88-page lawsuit drew quick fire from Apple, which said it "threatens who we are." The company vowed to "vigorously defend' itself against the DOJ.
Following several years of investigation, the suit cites numerous internal Apple emails, makes numerous arguments about what the company is doing wrong, and demands that Apple's anti-competitive business practices "must stop."

What happened to the Windows Subsystem for Android?
When Microsoft unveiled Windows 11, one of its big features was support for running Android apps with the "Windows Subsystem for Android."
That feature was delayed, and Microsoft ended up launching it quietly. You could install the Amazon Appstore from the Microsoft Store on Windows, and then you could install Android apps from the Amazon Appstore on your Windows PC.
But most Android apps aren't available on the Amazon Appstore — instead, they're on Google Play. Neither Microsoft nor Amazon really spent much time pushing or advertising these Android apps.

Microsoft on Tuesday announced the hiring of Mustafa Suleyman, a former co-founder of DeepMind, the AI startup acquired by Google in 2014. Suleyman will assume the role of executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft AI, directly reporting to CEO Satya Nadella.
During Suleyman's time at Google, DeepMind established itself as a frontrunner in AI research; it also caught the eye of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who moved to counteract Google's growth by founding the nonprofit AI lab, OpenAI.

If your company uses Google's suite of office apps, you're probably familiar with Google Meet, the vendor's web-based videoconferencing app. Meet is included with paid Google Workspace plans, and a free version with fewer features is available to anyone with a Google account, such as a Gmail address.
The Chrome Web Store offers a slew of extensions you can install to your Chrome browser that enhance Meet in some way. At this point, the best thing Mozilla Corp. has going for it is that it is not a publicly traded company, because if it was, its stock would be getting slaughtered. The company's CEO, Mitchell Baker, recently departed, and recent reports put its share of the browser market in the low single digits.
But Mozilla is no stranger to challenges. It was born into adversity, launched after the collapse of Netscape Communications in 2003. As one of its last acts, Netscape open-sourced the code for its eponymous browser. The Mozilla Foundation was formed to take up the project abandoned by Netscape and create a new, modern browser. And it did so with Microsoft owning virtually the entire browser space by that point.
