On its quarterly earnings calls, Apple provides informal financial guidance that helps set expectations for investors and Wall Street analysts. On its latest earnings call yesterday, however, Apple mentioned something that it had not before.
The WEI was introduced in Windows Vista. It provided a numerical assessment of a computer's hardware and software performance on a scale of 1 to 10.
While the direct display feature for the WEI was removed in Windows 8.1, the tool still exists in Windows 11, and you can access it the way I'm going to show you below.
Why would you want to use it? Well, figuratively speaking, it lets you put on your system administrator's cap and analyze the performance of components like your CPU and storage drive. With the numerical performance values you get, you can more easily decide whether you need to upgrade anything.
Interpreting the WEI is easy: Scores closer to 10 indicate a faster and more responsive PC. It's very difficult to get 10/10, so you should consider anything in the 9s as exceptional.
What to do:
In Windows 11 Search type CMD, to access the command prompt.
Now type the command winsat formal. You should see a process run that indicates the PC is analyzing the system hardware. If it doesn't, retype the command.
Now navigate to C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore and open the html file with today's date.
Find WinSPR in the data listed in the html file and view the WEI info below it.
Statcounter, which tracks the market share of operating systems, browsers, social media sites, and more, has begun tracking the number of sessions by users who visit artificial intelligence sites like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude AI, Microsoft Copilot, and more. The winner, not surprisingly, is ChatGPT, by an enormous margin: over 80 percent and climbing, which coincides with our own chatbot tests.
Statcounter began tracking the statistics in March, and they've roughly remained the same since then: ChatGPT absolutely dominates, with a cluster of smaller AI chatbots below. So far, the only major change seems to have been Perplexity AI, which captured 16 percent of U.S. users in March, but has dropped to about 6 percent since then. Microsoft's Copilot has risen, beginning at under 1 percent and now capturing about 10 percent of the market.
For the U.S,, the Statcounter numbers break down as follows: in July, 80.22 percent of U.S. chatbot sessions went to ChatGPT, 9.51 percent to Copilot, 5.61 percent for Perplexity, 2.67 percent to Google Gemini, and 1.56 percent to Claude, with Deepseek capturing just 0.43 percent.
On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we focus on the latest rumors about the two standard iPhone models expected to arrive this fall: the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air.
This is obviously a problem in need of fixing, and OpenAI's answer is a Study Mode that's now baked into ChatGPT. The idea is to stop students from simply asking ChatGPT to tell them the answer to a question, and to have ChatGPT teach them how to answer the question for themselves.
Will this work? Possibly. Maybe. Probably not. Either way, I gave ChatGPT's Study Mode a spin for ourselves to find out what it's capable of - and I wound up utterly loving it.
How to enable ChatGPT's Study Mode
Thank you to everyone who's made iPhone such an important part of their lives. I'm incredibly excited for what's ahead!
Apple customers afraid of massive price hikes because of tariffs helped Apple's device sales during the fiscal third quarter of 2025, Apple CEO Tim Cook said today.
The order will take effect on August 29 at midnight, on goods that enter the country or are withdrawn from a warehouse for consumption.
The de minimis exemption allows goods valued under $800 to be imported to the United States without being tariffed. Put another way, it's a way for consumers to buy an item or two from Amazon, Shein, or another site without having to pay a tariff on top of sales tax. With the revocation of the exemption, you'll pay tax and tariffs, both — which are largely the same thing, anyway.
Trump filed the order on Wednesday. In April, Trump "declared a national emergency with respect to underlying conditions indicated by the large and persistent annual U.S. goods trade deficits," but left the de minimis exception in place. Trump said at the time that the Department of Commerce could not adequately process the tariffs on small items.
Trump's order said that the Secretary of Commerce reports that those systems are now in place, and that tariffs will be applied.
Trump had levied tariffs on China and Hong Kong in response to what he had said was the unlawful import of opioids. In his order, Trump declared that there are still "unusual and extraordinary threats" that exist in whole or in part outside of the United States, and that those threats justified suspending the de minimis exemption.
At this price, it's the cheapest it's ever been, making it the perfect time to snag one for your trips. But the price isn't the only thing that's insane about this solar power bank! You're looking at a jaw-dropping capacity of 42,800mAh, which is enough to charge your phone about eight times over (give or take, depending on your phone's model). It has two USB-A ports, so you can charge two devices at once.
This power bank also has a built-in LED flashlight that lasts up to a continuous 100 hours on a full charge. When it's depleted, it can be recharged via solar (might take a couple of days) or via USB-C (much faster at about 10.5 hours). And you have nothing to worry about when you take it hiking or camping, as it's ruggedly waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof for peace of mind.
Frankly, it's an incredible gadget for just over $25, so you should really snag one on sale while you can. Again, it's the cheapest it's ever been, and it's even great as a backup for home power outages.

Add Microsoft's Surface lineup to the list of gear that now costs more. XDA first spotted price hikes of around 20 percent for most existing models. The damage applies to the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro lines, as well as power bricks.
The starting prices of the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop and 13-inch Surface Pro increased from $1,000 to $1,200. Of course, the new devices Microsoft launched on Tuesday stand pat. (And their curiously high prices now make more sense.) Only the 15-inch Surface Laptop was spared, sticking to its original $1,300.
Even accessories like power supplies are part of the fun. The 65W Surface power supply shot up from $90 to $120, and the 127W variant went from $125 to $175.
PCMag notes that retail partners like Best Buy and Amazon still show the original prices. So, if you were considering a new Surface, that's a good place to start.
