Meta's Movie Gen looks like a huge leap forward for AI video (but you can't use it yet)
At this point, you probably either love the idea of making realistic videos with generative AI, or you think it's a morally bankrupt endeavor that devalues artists and will usher in a disastrous era of deepfakes we'll never escape from. It's hard to find middle ground. Meta isn't going to change minds with Movie Gen, its latest video creation AI model, but no matter what you think of AI media creation, it could end up being a significant milestone for the industry.

Movie Gen can produce realistic videos alongside music and sound effects at 16 fps or 24 fps at up to 1080p (upscaled from 768 by 768 pixels). It can also generative personalized videos if you upload a photo, and crucially, it appears to be easy to edit videos using simple text commands. Notably, it can also edit normal, non-AI videos with text. It's easy to imagine how that could be useful for cleaning up something you've shot on your phone for Instagram. Movie Gen is just purely research at the moment —Meta won't be releasing it to the public, so we have a bit of time to think about what it all means.

The company describes Movie Gen as its "third wave" of generative AI research, following its initial media creation tools like Make-A-Scene, as well as

Google Search is testing Twitter-style verification badges

The Verge spotted verification badges next to some well-known company names in Google search results that led right to their relevant websites. Amazon, Apple, Epic Games, HP, Meta, and Microsoft were among the examples seen, though the badges aren't showing up for everyone — not even the same person logged into different accounts.

"This icon is being shown because Google's signals suggest that this business is the business that it says it is," says the pop-up message for the badge (unhelpfully omitting a link to the definition of tautology on Wiktionary). It finishes in a bit of CYA legalese: "Google can't guarantee the reliability of this business or its products."

As an adoption of visual language that tons of people are familiar with, it makes sense. Even after all the drama surrounding Twitter's verification system after the blue checks became effectively useless after Musk's acquisition, little colored check mark icons remain social media speak for "this thing is legit."

But applying this to Search would require web-wide automation,

The Morning After: Microsoft is killing off HoloLens 2
Microsoft is discontinuing production of its HoloLens 2 headset, according a report from UploadVR. The company has no plans for a follow-up device, telling customers this will be the last chance to purchase the headset before stock runs out. At launch, it was advertised as a device for enterprise consumers, so it never really entered the mass market. The move isn't that surprising, considering Microsoft scrapped plans for a HoloLens 3 headset back in 2022. We're waiting for the official line from the company.

It's not exactly indicative of a death knell for VR and AR, though. Apple's Vision Pro isn't yet a year old, while Meta and Snap have both announced new glasses hardware in the last month. However, those last two companies' take on AR are substantially smaller (and lighter) than the HoloLens — if not exactly subtle.
