Stocks fall sharply but end off lows as Dow averts bear market
Stocks ended with sharp declines, but off session lows, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average averting a bear market as it posted its lowest close of 2022. Equities fell sharply as government bond yields soared following the Federal Reserve's rate increase and tightening by other central banks and as the U.S. dollar soared versus major rivals. The Dow ended around 486 points lower, down 1.6%, near 29,590, according to preliminary figures. The Dow fell more than 800 points at its session low and temporarily traded below the threshold that would have seen the blue-chip gauge fall into a bear market. The S&P 500 fell 1.7% to end near 3,693, after trading below its June 16 closing low of 3,666.77, during the session. The Nasdaq Composite shed 1.8% to finish near 10,868.

19 Best Stocks to Buy Now for High Upside Potential
If the goal is to find stocks to buy when prices are lower rather than higher, it stands to reason that the time to go looking for the best stocks to buy is right now.

After all, the market is off by more than a fifth so far this year, which means it's probably safe to assume that most investors are fearful. And if most investors are fearful, well… doesn't Warren Buffett say that this is the time to get at least a little bit greedy?

SEE MORE 11 Stock Picks That Billionaires Love Finding quality stocks to buy when seemingly everything is selling off is easier said than done, of course. And if you're looking for help from Wall Street analysts, good luck. There's a saying about analysts: "In a bull market you don't need them; in a bear market you don't want them."

That's far too harsh as an assessment - but understandable as a sentiment. It's well known that Wall Street analysts are reluctant to slap Sell calls on the stocks they cover. There are a number of reasons for this reticence, but that's a discussion for another day.

Perhaps less well known is that analysts are also pretty stingy when it comes to bestowing the highest conviction Buy recommendations on the names they follow.

As of Sept. 22, only five stocks in the S&P 500 carried consensus recommendations of Sell or Strong Sell, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. At the other end of the ratings spectrum, 392 of the index's 500 stocks had consensus recommendations of Buy or Strong Buy.

That's far too many Buy calls, to be sure. We know for a fact that the vast majority of stocks turn out to be duds. Research shows that the entirety of the $75.7 trillion in net global stock market wealth created between 1990 a

U.S. stocks open lower Friday, head for weekly losses after surge in Treasury yields
U.S. stocks opened sharply lower Friday, with all three major benchmarks heading for weekly losses in the wake of the Federal Reserve's large interest rate hike and a surge in Treasury yields. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down around 1% soon after the opening bell, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.1% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.1%, according to FactSet data, at last check. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was up 2 basis points Friday morning at 3.71% after climbing Thursday to the highest level since February 2011, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Growth and technology stocks are particularly vulnerable to rising rates. The Dow is on track to fall 3.4% this week, while the S&P 500 is heading for a 4.1% drop and the tech-heavy Nasdaq is on pace to drop 4.4%, FactSet data show, at last check.

Gold futures mark their lowest settlement since April 2020
Gold futures fell Friday, with prices for the most-active contract losing 1.7% for the week and settling at their lowest since early April 2020. The surge in Treasury yields, along with a stronger U.S. dollar has "unsurprisingly clobbered the gold price, clubbing it back down to its lowest levels in over 2 years, against a backdrop of fears of further aggressive rate moves from the Federal Reserve," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK. December gold fell $25.50, or 1.5%, to settle at $1,655.60 an ounce on Comex.
